I am not sure if this is "inappropriate review", but this guy is doing some mathematic calculations, not reviewing.

PINK FLOYD
Ummagumma

     Review by Marquês Van Prög
12:01:10 PM EST, 11/9/2005

5 stars — Just before the end of the Sixties, Pink Floyd did the unthinkable, and released a double album of four classic tracks done live in front of small audiences, and another side of freaky, experimental works that, at best, allowed each individual member a chance to display their own unique musical vision. This is Pink Floyd in their relative infancy - exploring uncharted territories of space and time and creating their own genre of art/space rock.

Studio Album

1. Sysyphus, Pt. 1, Pt.2, Pt.3, Pt.4 - . Richard Wright begins this odyssey, with Sysyphus, a hauntigly beautiful piece, full of his keyboard work. A wonderful intro. 4/5

5. Grantchester Meadows - One of the Floyd's best early songs with some of Waters' best lyrics. A great slow song. 5/5

6 .Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict - by far the most bizarre song ever dreamed up by Pink Floyd. If you listen closely, towards the end, one of the voices that make up this song seems to be saying "I need a hit" of acid ? 4.5/5

7 . The Narrow Way: Pt. 1 ,Pt. 2 , Pt. 3 - David Gilmour's guitar driven "The Narrow Way" is by far the most impressive, showcasing his great guitar skills. Beutiful Melody!! 5/5

10 - Grand Vizier's Garden Party: Enterance, Pt. 1- Entertainment, Pt. 2 - Exit, Pt. 3 - is a complex sound collage, which builds layers of percussion and stretches recording technology to the brink. It makes an interesting listen and the drum solo at the end of part two is superb. Nick closes the piece and the album with unassuming flutes. 4/5

Note : 4+5+4.5+5+4= 22.5

22.5 : 5 = 4.5

Live Album

1. Astronomy Domine 4.5/5

2. Careful With That Axe, Eugene (Instrumental) 4.5/5

3. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun 4.5/5

4. Saucerful of Secrets 5/5

The live album is fantastic. Just four songs, but they're all classic early Floyd. Some tracks, sounds even better live than in it's original studio version.

Note: 4.5+4.5+4.5+5 = 18,5

18,5 : 4 = 4,6

Final Note : Ummagumma is like a Quantum Physics book ,it is almost impossible to cross ,It is obscure and unique in the way it sounds .But when you understand it ,you penetrate in a real new environment . I highly recommend this album.

4.5 + 4,6 = 9,1

9,1 : 2 = 4,5

Essential: a masterpiece of progressive music

I think his reviews are fine Seyo, but I agree the mathematics are distracting and superfluous. Here's a recent thread on the subject.

Not offensive, or anything, not even a review:

KING CRIMSon Red progressive rock album and reviews Symphonic Prog
(Studio Album, 1974)

KING CRIMSON "Red"
Review (Permanent link) by Strik9
Posted 11:12:37 PM EST, 11/9/2005

5 stars   INCREDIBLE!!! King Crimson is my favourite prog band, and in my top 3 bands of all time. This album is WAY ahead of it's time, and will ALWAYS remain a classic! I HIGHLY suggest any fan of MUSIC to add Red to their collection!!! Robert Fripp is a GENIUS!!!

We want reviews not propaganda by blind fans with absolutely no information about the album, oif I was a newbie and read this joke I would doubt very much aboput PA being serious, says absolutely nothing except cliches like Incredible, Classic and Genius..

Iván

PS: About the equation reviews, saw them and hated that way of reviewing, music is an art not an exact science, the reviews are not bad, but I also agree that equations are out of place.

the review is fine enough although there is just too much matematics than anything else and that gets kind of silly as you can't really rate music that way...

I must confess that guy is one of my favourite ever "acquaintances" on ProgArchives ... the definitive "harmless nut" ...
"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

You appear rather selective in the guidelines you wish to observe and which you demand observance of. What about the respect for fellow reviewers guideline?

The fact is that Gatot Widyanto, and Hugues Chantraine are highly respected reviewers on this site. If you don't enjoy their reviews that is up to you. I do not agree with your comments about their command of English. Even if I did, this is an international site and we wish to be as inclusive as we can practically be.

I have deleted your review above as it clearly breaches the guidelines. You have not reviewed that album at all, and your attack on a fellow member is unacceptable. You are quite at liberty to discuss whether or not any band should be listed on the site, but the forum is the place for that discussion, not the reviews section.

Sorry to come into this a bit late, but I'd just like to stick up for Gatot and Hugues as well - two of the best reviewers around. Also, please can we keep braindamage's reviews - they're one of the main reasons I joined this forum, although I must admit they're starting to make a bit of sense now so they're not so funny.

Re the "WHAT ALBUM IS THIS", if I have to read one more review which starts along the lines "What can I say about this album...." I'll do something I'll later regret!DeadLOL

CENTIPEDE "Septober Energy"
Review (Permanent link) by Brendan
Posted 5:00:18 AM EST, 11/11/2005

4 stars   It's not at all the same thing than King Crimson (cf Robert Fripp, Keith Tippett, Ian McDonald, Mark Charig, Harry Miller, Boz Burrell) or Soft Machine (cf Robert Wyatt, Elton Dean, Nick Evans). Only if you know Keith Tippett Group, Brotherhood Of Breath, Nucleus (cf Karl Jenkins, Roy Babbington). Personally, I love these four crazy sides !

Hah! Another "review" that seems to be more keen on naming band members than actually reviewing anything

MAGIC PIE Motions Of Desire
Review (Permanent link) by brian @ 4:40:48 PM EST, 9/16/2005

1 stars  —  This is really bad version of yes and it is very cheesy. Good musicians but that does not make you good music as Dream Theater have proved. If you was to listen to somerthing on these lines listen to Close To The Edge by Yes. This is Poor!

5 stars   One of the very best albums ever made. The very simple, repetitive acoustic line is stretched to the very limit, yet everyone can hum to the more harder sound, that is the key of the success in it.

This is on the very brink of what i would accept, i think when you give a album 1 or 5 stars you would need some more explanation than that done...
