Hey, anyone give any thought to creating a sister site, PROG-METAL-ARCHIVES?  It would certainly put an end to the non-metal proggers who feel we are taking over their site.  And I just checked and www.progmetalarchives.com is AVAILABLE!

I'd be willing to put some time and money into it if anyone else is.

I've said it before and ill say it again It says pro archives at the top of the page, meaning it catters to all progressive music (or near enough).

Hey, it was only a suggestion.  I know it says PROG ARCHIVES, and I really appreciate the fact that so many people who like such radically different forms of music can come together under the umbrella of prog and have a site like this to share.  I think MikeER is doing a fantastic job, he's putting in a ton of work, and I don't envy him.  Keep it up.  I'm excited to see how it turns out.

Sorry if i seemed a little anoyed but there are certain people who seem to think this site is for prog rock only, although they are in the minority. Thankfully this is the prog archies and we can explore the full breadth of progressive music hear, weather influenced by mozart or metallica (or both).

Some of what you propose has been discussed earlier ... let me try to summarize what I think about it:

  • What I call "Symphonic Prog Metal" is what you call just "Prog Metal". I don't want to call it just "Prog Metal", but I agree that "Symphonic Prog Metal is not perfect. We need something like "Standard Prog Metal", "Mainstream Prog Metal" or "Classic Prog Metal", but neither of those labels fits either.
  • I really think that "Progressive Power" and "Neoclassical" should be combined. Many of the Power bands have neoclassical elements, and most of the neoclassical bands are also Power Metal bands. IMO they are too closely related to be separated.
  • Fusion/Shred might be a good stand alone genre, but right now there wouldn't be enough bands. Add to that the fact that these bands are quite similar to the Experimental/Technical bands, and you'll understand why I combined them.
  • Dark Suns are not Death Metal at all.

I updated the chart - some major changes ...

Yes, the chart is looking very good, I could live with the new changes, much less confusing...

ok, why is katatonia here? Great band, got their whole discography (2/3 things missing maybe) and I love it. Since when is katatonia a progressive metal/rock band?

Wow, I hadn't noticed that they were added. In my previous post (which I deleted) I said that I would not add them ... but now that they're here, I can support them. I wouldn't have added them myself, but I really think that they fit nicely into the Avant/Post Prog Metal genre.

They wont fit niceley into the avant/post prog metal genre.. Why? because they're just as prog as the paperclip in my left pocket right now. They just aren't. They do have gotten trough a PROGRESS, but madonna has done that also. They're not progressive in ANY way, if katatonia would be added, the whole "progressive metal" genre would be a joke and an unprofessional compliation of some metal bands some people here just like.

They're prog related, I've just put them under prog metal because they are metal, my fault, we can continue talking about it or get over it, I think that if it is classified under prog related it is at the right spot.

Prog Related and Proto-Prog should be additional attributes, not separate genres. In the meantime (until this is implemented) we'll have to live with bands as diverse as Queen, Metallica (maybe) and Katatonia in the same category.

PROG RELATED??? that's BULL! Like hi I'm the friend of mikael akerfelt, can't you see now how proggy my music is?!?!?

It's just utterly stupid, face it! Katatonia ISNT prog, in ANY way. Plain metal/emotional rock/metal band.

Maybe you should categorize albums, not bands.

Ummmm....like I said to the like 10 other people that suggested that, categorizing the bands was a lot of work.To categorize every individual album that all these bands made would involve a staggeringly large amount of time and work.

Let's worry about the bands first.
