This probably one of the dumbest polls I have seen come up in a progressive music site.

No, you don't ban someone cause you dislike their music or think they have no talent.
I listen to a little bit of rap, and I really don't think it takes any talent, unless it's an on the spot "battle rap", but hell, some people enjoy it.

But let's face it Mystic. Most rappers aren't just talentless, they are also usually thugs, guilty of theft, assault, battery, drug possession and sales, firearm possession violations, and some even murder or attempted murder. They are disgusting vermin. That's why they should be banned (read killed) not because they have no talent, but because they have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

It's horrible if kids look up to people like that, and idolize them, but if they're making music that people enjoy, what can you do? Just ignore it if you don't like it.

If by most rappers then you mean most popular rappers, then that's something close to vaguely true.

They came Turkey in a rock festival called Rock'nCoke. SOme other bands i remember were Iggy & The Stooges, The Rasmus, Ash, Sly & Robbie Fun Lovin Criminals etc. Ok not a fantastic organisation, but what the hell is 50 Cent? Are they musicians? No, they are suckers...

BTW...What is your reasoning for this? What has he done that has offended you so badly you think he needs banned from tv and radio?
|
His lyrics are horrible, they don't seem to be very inspired. I suppose you can call it self expression, but it seems he's just following trends, and trying to be the "baddest" he can be. Really though, his lyrics even offend me, and I don't care about too much, but his lyrics are sexist and all that. Just look at the lyrics for his song "Just A Lil Bit." And his messages of sex and violence aren't very good examples for kids who look up to him. And now he goes and makes a movie about his life. And it seems like he brags how he got shot nine times, or at least he used to. But, then again, maybe he's just trying to fit an image that he was unfairly labelled with and he'll fail if he doesn't conform to that specific image. Wow, writing that made me think. Maybe I do have some sympathy for him now... or maybe I just think I do and I really don't care at all.

It sounds like someone should check out the Zappa thread. There is a link there to a clip where he debates censorship.
Fity is a no talent product of marketing, but he has the right to suck. If our youth had a better understanding of music, he wouldn't be that popular.

Agree with you 100% (For a change ) his music may suck and according to my taste it does suck.
If I had a TV station I would never play it but that's my personal choice, what should be mandatory is to explain parents of the nature of his lyrics before playing a song.
But I disagree with censorship in public places also. Now in private places, the owners are allowed to decide what to play or not.

Definitely not.
Banning someone is one of the best ways of guaranteeing disproportionatley high record sales - and someone like 50 cent doesn't deserve the controversy he obviously wants for self-publicity.
Let everyone hear how crap he is. |
That's pretty much in line with my thinking on this.
"Forbidden fruit" can be very attractive, especially to a young person.
Parental guidance, not outright state censorship, is indicated (not that my kids would want any of his stuff anyway).
You can buy a gun, can't you? Surely that's much more likely to lead to real trouble than a mere rap CD (no matter how distasteful).
Perhaps death metal should be banned too? Once the banning starts, where does it stop?
What would Zappa say?
