It's definitely a great song, but I wouldn't even consider it the best on that album. That title goes to "Knots," closely followed by "The Boys in the Band."

Yeah, I love that song! There are some GG songs I prefer, such as River and The Boys in the Band,(I only own Octopus ) but great tune nonetheless. |

You definitely need to give that song patience, but once it snaps, it's brilliant! By far one of the weirdest things I've ever heard, too. Gregorian-influenced vocals, baritone sax, violin, and xylophone? It sounds crazy before you've even heard the song!

I would put it in my top 5 favorite GG tunes. I think it is their best
on Octopus. |

Advent was the song which got me into listening to prog
My dad owned a bunch of their old vinyls. If you're not ready for
Knots yet you may want to try Three Friends, it's similar to Octopus
(released a year before Octopus I think) but it's a bit more melodic
and probably a bit more accessible, just as awesome as Octopus
though. All of their releases are great.

I love Funny Ways (which I'm listening to at the moment), Proclamation, Free Hand and The Moon is Down rather more, but I actually believe that Gentle Giant are incapable of making bad music, simply because they combine the technical skill of bands like Dream Theater with vastly better compositional skills so that anything they do is interesting. But they are not easy listening; it is a relef sometimes to get out a Camel, Renaissance or Genesis CD for something more melodic after a heavy GG session.

Listenership is a mantle one must learn to lift.
Giant has always been a bit more of a burden for a lotta folks. It is this effort, and the growth that occurs because of it that makes them both so endearing, and enduring. Advent is a fine track on a supurb record. SM. |

It is. And the outro vamp that follows is as clever, beautiful and compelling as anything in the genre. Just amazing. God... I loved these kids. SM. |

I love the completely atonal piano that comes in after the vocal introduction. So dischordant, but perfect.

It is an amazing song. I loved it the first time I heard it 8
years ago. The Octopus album is one of my all time favourite albums.
I'm not still sure if "Advent Of Parnuge" is my favourite GG song since they have so many greats. But it's among them. |
