Topic: IRON MAIDEN Posted: November 03 2005 at 08:55 |
I HAVE NOTICED A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE SITE REALLY LOVE IRON MAIDEN, MYSELF AMONG THEM!!
SURE, THEY ARE NOT PROG BUT IMHO, ARE VERY RELATED, MORE THAN A LOT OF BANDS WHO ARE ON THE ARCHIVES.
ANY WAY I WAS WONDERING WHAT DO YOU THINK IS MAIDENS GREATEST PROG SONG?
I WOULD DEFINITELY SAY:
1. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - ONE OF THE BEST SOLOS EVER RECORDED
2. THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER - A TRUE CLASSIC EPIC
WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Iron Maiden definitely flirted with the "Progressiveish" Metal
style, especially between the Piece of Mind album and around
X Factor. A lot of their songs between this period had a
somewhat 'Progressive" tint in them. The chords got more
complex and the song length grew. They should definitely be
included in the Archives not as Progressive Metal but as 'Prog
related", since we have Masterplan and Deep Purple in there,
which IMO aren't as "Progressive" as Maiden is.
My favorite I.M. has to be their epic. I just love Seventh Sons [=

I think their progiest work is 7th son. So I would pick something from this... Perhaps Infinite Dreams.

Phantom of the Opera is a really nice and complex song.
Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a long song, but IMO not a prog epic. The parts are quite simple and repetitive ... I like it very much, but - not prog.

My favourite song on the album and one of my IM favourite songs. I am no authority on this matter but It does have a prog-like structure and quality to it.

Hello first of all...remember caps lock
And second of all i think you should turn to Dream of mirrors, Sign of the cross and The Unbelivier for an example of the proggier moments of maiden...
And if you are Implying that the Rime of the ancient mariner is too simple to be prog i would rather turn my eyes onto Opeth

The riffs in Rime of the Ancient Mariner are really simple. And the song merely has "chapters" which are based on one simple riff each. Most Opeth songs are much more complex. They don't sound very complex, but when you try to play them, you'll see what I mean.

ah yes the oh so complex opeth uses this recipe to great effect on every song over 9 minutes on the ghost reveries album...
Heavy opening riff+accoustic middle part+Heavy middle part and solo+accoustic again+heavy ending riff...
and the riffs sounds so incredibly similiar that i think mr akerfield actually only knows one riff...

I think I mentioned in another thread (I beleive it was are Iron maiden and Metallica prog related) that Iron Maiden, I beleive are the founders or prog-metal due to Steve Harris being a huge Jethro Tull fan and when prog went underground an he stared up Maiden he took those prog ideals of music being a canvas to write a masterpiece onto and and song dosent have to stop after 3/5mins in turn createing prog metal via maiden.
There best progesque song/album is 7th son and either rime of the ancient mariner or hallowed be thy name but then alot of their stuff is very proggy either in length or subject matter.

I think the main reason why you prog metal fanboys dont see maiden as prog related is this:
1.They dont got keyboards
2.They dont care to use complex time signatures if it does not sound good.
3.They are too famous

Infact in the early 80's maiden was the most proggiest band in the world for a short time

Ok, if you're that shallow ... then 99% of all metal music is based on the same riff.

AHA! I'd never thought Mr. Prog-Metal himself would ever admit it ... and I've caught him red-handed!
Only kidding Mike ... back on track ... my ultimate Maiden track is Hallowed Be Thy Name
altogether now ... "I'm waiting in my cold cell ...

Uh, Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son utilized synthesizers
I agree about Steve Harris being perhaps the pioneer of
prog-metal. If there is anything prog about Maiden, Stevey is the
reason.
Maiden can never be too famous

That was guitar/bass synths and i meant that they got a real keyboardist in the band that plays solos and stuff...and famous bands is not very popular on the prog archives...unless they are quite old

In Maiden's case though, you can't deny the musicianship. I think
that's why although they are not prog, proggers have a special place
for them in their musical taste.

Dance of Death is undoubtedly their strongest release since Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.
Iron Maiden is my favorite metal band, and the first band I became obsessed with at an early age. They rank third on the all-time favorite list, behind Hawkwind and Blue Oyster Cult. I saw them live at Madison Square Garden a few years back and they put on a spectacular show.
