I believe the IP address is part of the check.

In any case, it will soon be a requirement that you register with the site before posting reviews.Wink

Great news about having to register to review - about time

This is a long "review" - but it doesn't say anything about the album, it just has a go at people who don't appreciate it, and what a jolly good job TMV are doing - it's more an appraisal of the band than the album. A forum post, methinks...

MARS VOLTA, THE Frances The Mute progressive rock album and reviews Art Rock
(Studio Album, 2005)

MARS VOLTA, THE "Frances The Mute"
Review (Permanent link) by invisibleredbeam @ 11:08:51 PM EST, 10/27/2005

3 stars   Never having been a huge At the Drive In fan (who strangely enough are rarely mentioned in the reviews above) I came to the Mars Volta with an open mind. Having read some of the reviews by the more conservative (one could almost say reactionary) reviewers I had to write my own.

Anyone who expects a classic prog-rock album from these guys will be sorely disappointed, yes Storm Thorgerson/Hipgnosis did the art, yes there are multi part epics, yes there is wild variation in dynamics/tempos, but remember the album was recorded in 2004, not 1974. It is therefore completely ridiculous to compare it to albums and standards from the classic prog era. I'm talking those who complain that only kids and 'fanboys' could possibly dig this as they are the only ones 'immature' enough to like it. This is elitist claptrap. Mars Volta are as prog as you can get in 2005 without being a throwback or revivalist group, they are trying to do something new and injecting life into a tired genre (and selling a lot of records too). For this progressive fans need to be thankful as TMV will bring new fans and interest to the genre which has in the last couple of decades become marginalised an irrelevant to the majority of rock music listeners out there. Remember if you want the music you like to grow and continue, new people may actually have to listen and contribute. I think TMV help in this regard.

Mars Volta can play their instruments, there may not be a virtuoso in the band but does there need to be? They can write intricate and engaging songs that are simultaneously difficult and listenable (i.e Cygnus... or the closing Cassandra... epic). Not an easy thing to do (though they do get lost from time to time in the noisy bridging sections). They can also write a decent pop song (the Widow), and of course thats the entry point for new fans. There's plenty to like here, it may not be 'old school' but it's pretty good.

Nonetheless one must keep in mind that times have changed, bands of today have a much different musical upbringing to those of the classic era. Remember Mars Volta came from a punk/hardcore background (anathema to many of the readers here, yes?) so their approach will be different (ATDI sounded like a pumped up Fugazi to me - which is not a bad thing at all), celebrate this difference. Isn't that the point of progressive rock, to progress? to incorporate a wide range of influences and ideas into a new, challenging and creative whole... perhaps not be stuck in the strictures of 1974, to use ideas that others wouldn't, like TMV do.

I find it odd that the self-proclaimed 'true' progressive fans seemingly don't want the genre to change, develop - to progress. This conservatism is the opposite of art and creativity, this emasculates the genre and makes it irrelevant when it's reason for being is gone. "Frances the Mute" should be lauded for bringing progressive music back to the general consciousness and expanding the audience it has.

TMV are good, not yet great. But they could be. Give it a go.

ORME, LE Felona e Sorona progressive rock album and reviews Italian Symphonic Prog
(Studio Album, 1973)
ORME, LE "Felona e Sorona "
Review (Permanent link) by L'albero del pane @ 2:01:39 PM EST, 10/28/2005
5 stars   Really a masterpiece, one of those things that made me proud of be italian. E’STATA UNA VERA E PROPRIA ESIGENZA DI TROVARSI PER SPERIMENTARE IL TEATRO ,QUELLA CHE HA UNITO UN GRUPPO DI PERSONE CHE HANNO DATO VITA ALLA COMPAGNIA TEATRALE “ CLAR DI LUNE “ A BERTIOLO; COMUNE DELLA BASSA FRIULANA. POCHI MA BASILARI GLI INGREDIENTI : UN GRUPPO AFFIATATO , UN AMMINISTRAZIONE COMUNALE ATTENTA E DISPONIBILE, TANTA VOGLIA DI COLLABORAZIONE E, APERTURA A SEMPRE NUOVE ESPERIENZE. SI PARTE CON LA REALIZZAZIONE DI UNA SEMPLICE FARSA FRIULANA,CHE SERVE AL GRUPPO PER FARE CONOSCENZA MA SOPRATTUTTO PER VALUTARE LE PROPRIE POTENZIALITA’. MOLTO ATTIVA E’ STATA LA COLLABORAZIONE CON LE VARIE ASS. CULTURALI DEL LUOGO,SONO NATI COSI DUE EMOZIONANTI SPETTACOLI ( cerclis di lune – San Martino 300 anni di storia ) CHE RIMARRANNO PER SEMPRE NEI CUORE DEGLI ATTORI .SI SCEGLIE DI FARE UN PERCORSO DI CONTINUA SPERIMENTAZIONE; CORSI DI STORIA DEL TEATRO, DI TRUCCO, DI MIMO, DI DIZIONE, SI ALTERNANO A LABORATORI SULLA CORALITA’,SULLA CLOWNERIE,SULL’IMPROVVISAZIONE,SULLA COSTRUZIONE DI UNO SPETTACOLO SERVENDOSI DEI TESTI LETTERARI ETC . MOLTE VOLTE IL GRUPPO SI METTE IN DISCUSSIONE PER LA PRESENTAZIONE DI SPETTACOLI CHE HANNO POCO DI COMMERCIALE,MA CHE RAPPRESENTANO UNA NOVITA’ PER GRUPPI AMATORIALI, COSI’ COME LA SCELTA DI REGISTI ESTERNI CHE CON LE LORO POTENZIALITA’ AUMENTANO LA PREPARAZIONE E L’AUTOSTIMA DEL GRUPPO, CON LABORATORI E CON UNA VISIONE PIU’ APERTA VERSO IL MONDO TEATRALE.

I'm italian and proud to see people who adore Le Orme, but this review, after that few english words, doesn't say nothing about the album, nor about the band!

AMON DÜÜL II Only Human
Review (Permanent link) by Lars Kristian Larsen @ 8:54:50 AM EST, 4/17/2005
5 stars — Try at least to get the line-up right. It is Klaus Ebert and NOT Erik Ebert that is playing Guitar and bass. Another truely supperb album by Amon Düül 2. Especially Don't Turn Too Stone and Spaniards & Spacemen. If you don't have it already, go buy it.

No real info on the album, attacking another reviewer, reporting error within "review" which is not appropriate thing to do... not a review at all!

This may be a bit of a novelty, but I'm requesting my own review to be removed. As you can see, its quite stupid and unjust, as I didnt properly listen to the album, so therefore its uninformative and misleading and kinda embarassing too, so I'd like it removed pls

CAMEL Mirage
Review (Permanent link) by Pafnutij @ 6:16:10 AM EST, 10/23/2005

2 stars  —  I've long considered Camel a second-tier band within the 70s prog scene, and this album does nothing to change my opinion, as it simply does not stand the test of time in terms of freshness and originality (and I doubt those qualities were prominent even when it came out in the early 70s). . The vast majority of the record is spent (wasted) in a rather hopeless pursuit of interesting harmonic ideas which, upon being discovered , are quickly drowned by filler. Thus, what we have here is hardly different from the self-titled debut (which is nothing special either) in terms of sound and approach - the melodies are mostly forgettable, the chord progression simplistic and predictable , Andy Latimer's vocals tired and bland, and the jamming over-extended and rather uninspired. In a way, every track provides hope with harmonic findings that could be turned into something far better if worked upon, but unfortunately, but the band doesn't bother to develop them any further, thus leaving "Mirage" thin and boring.

CAMEL Mirage
Review (Permanent link) by Muhammad Al Fatil @ 9:21:40 PM EST, 7/1/2005

Easy Livin,

If you want to replace the Spanish text of Muhammad Al Fatil's review of "Mirage", rather than just deleting it, then here is a translation, as it seems a shame to delete it.

This does not seem to me to be an immortal work of progressive rock.  If it is, I consider that it is only because it is one of those accessible and easily-digestible discs that help those who are not familiar with the genre to know its main parameters because, if it is full of something, this disc is full of clichés.  Structurally and musically not much new was contributed here:  the keyboard and guitar solos are strongly reminiscent of the Canterbury bands, especially the first CARAVAN ( Latimer's voice is very reminiscent of Richard Sinclair's voice, who would later join CAMEL), although I must recognize that the band shows an enviable musical guarantee and musicianship that cannot be refuted - the fact that they are not very original is another story. My favourite themes are 'Supertwister' and 'Nimrodel'.  But I think that CAMEL giving of its best does not manage to place itself in the first division of progressive rock, that elite group in which I place GENESIS, KING CRIMSON, YES, VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, ELP or JETHRO TULL...  Perhaps I discovered them too late...  "Mirage" is a pioneer disc, for that reason the three stars.

Many thanks FitzClap, I had left the rating intact, so I've added the English text.

SUPERTRAMP "Retrospectable - The Anthology"
Review (Permanent link) by NEL NOME DEL PROG @ 12:46:45 PM EST, 11/1/2005
3 stars   The Supertramp are a prog group doing not do prog. And "Retrospectacle" the confirmation to full title. However this farewell until Davies and Hodgson are together, that is to say until "Famous Last Words". Then they becomes a new wave group. And until this point there are almost all the songs they gave back them famous, in a sort of blues POP prog. Then the compilation is not more interesting and or rather becomes material that (but is my opinion) I censor. However thanks it to exist Supertramp.

4 stars   It is not a disk prog, but a disk of "rhytmic noises"! "Deception Of The Trush" is the summary of the project "ProjeKcts" where the group came split in four. And it tested in absolute manner. And this is the truth progressive. Fortunately it is not weighing and it am listened to pleasantly. But it is not a good disk to discover the "90's Crimson".

3 stars   Waiting it has been a disk from 5 stars. If however it contained alone records of 1974. But also in this case would not deserve them because the sound is not good. But it is superior to a bootleg (the live LP of the PFM "Live In USA" nothing says?). The music stays from 5 stars, but the too variety between the two records penalizes too this (in the card) masterpiece. 5 stars for the music. 2 stars for the record of 1974. 3 for those of the '97/ '98. Therefore: 3,3ecc stars, in definitive.

No, records good from as reviewer says. Takes knock, but recovers center of mat. Not to delete, but to allow in now form. Sense of hardness in eye of prog, not of exist. Disks internet require understanding not lolling in "quite hard."

We have another "Braindamage" I think. I working on both.Wink The problem with rewriting them to try to make sense is the time element. If anyone feels like doing so, send me the text and I'll update the reviews.

PINK FLOYD "Piper at the Gates of Dawn, The"
Review (Permanent link) by Marquês Van Prög @ 3:59:51 AM EST, 11/3/2005
5 stars   1967's "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" is the one that started it all for Pink Floyd, back in the early days when bassist Roger Waters, keyboardist Richard Wright & drummer Nick Mason were led by the genius, but doomed singer/guitarist Syd Barrett.

This tells more of the band line up than anything else

5 stars   This is in every way a superb album and is one of the greatest albums in history. The album contains some of the very best songs you will ever hear, such as "Knots" and "River" which are mastifully written. I would reccomend this album to everyone who likes prog it is a MUST HAVE.

This is also fanboyish
