A great prog country that is overlooked even by progarchives is Japan. Here are my favorite Japanese prog bands and what they sound like:

Malice Mizer: Symphonic Prog. They mix rock with baroque classical music. Currently not making any more music. FAVORITE SONG: SYUNIKISS

Moi dix Mois: Symphonic Prog. Formed by the former guitarist of Malice Mizer, so they sound exactly the same. FAVORITE SONG: N/A

Gackt: Art Rock. Former lead singer of Malice Mizer. It's a combo of pop and art rock. Most prog albums are Moon, Mars, and Crescent, in that order. Rebirth is not very progressive oriented. He has an extremely wide vocal range. Think Freddy Mercury. FAVORITE SONG: LUNA

X Japan: Prog Metal. Probably not prog, but they sound prog-esque. They sound like a combo of Dream Theater and Scorpions. The first really successful Japanese band. FAVORITE SONG: SILENT JEALOUSY or KURENAI

L'Arc~en~Ciel: Art Rock. They sound kind of like Rush in the 90s, but more interesting because their songs are all different. Lead singer has a wide vocal range. He sounds a bit annoying when he sings high, but his middle and lower octaves are incredible. Their older music has more of an 80s feel (think Journey), but their newer stuff has better vocals because the lead singer sings deeper now. FAVORITE SONG: READY STEADY GO

Dir en Grey: Experimental. For fans of weird music. Their songs range from death metal screaming to dark prog melodies similar to Tool and Pink Floyd melded together. Their lead singer is not too good, but he writes all the lyrics, which mostly tell some kind of dark story. FAVORITE SONG: CAGE

Siam Shade: Art Rock. My favorite Japanese band. They sound like Rush's Moving Pictures or Permanent Waves melded with Van Halen. Their lead singer doesn't have a very wide range, but his tone is good. He reminds me a bit of Geddy Lee from the 80s. FAVORITE SONG: DREAMS

The Black Mages: Instrumental Prog Metal. They sound like Yes on steroids. They are composed of a bassist, a drummer, two guitarists, a keyboarder, and a hammond organist. The hammond player, Nobuo Uematsu, writes all the music, and he also composes film and game scores (like Trevor Rabin). FAVORITE SONG: FORCE YOUR WAY

One likes to believe in the freedom of music, for glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity.

If you are really good and will become a world famous virtuous guy, whose music will be hated and loved but by anyone at least respected, you must come to Holland.

That is just egocentric, so I can say I was there when The Progfather came to Holland the first time.

My story of the first concert of Nirvana, where one could stagedive in front of Kurt Cobain is still good for some respect, but is slowly running out and does not have an enormous effect on the younger scene (Kurt who?).
So I need a new one, and you play the main character.

late 60's and early 70's - England

mid 70's - Germany

from 90's-> - Sweden

I haven't listened much Italian prog (yet), so I can't form my own opinnion from their material!

But there is a Turkish band in the Archives - Nekropsi.  There aren't any South African ones here.

Is there a way of getting a list of all the countries available here?  I know you can do it though http://www.progarchives.com/Band-list.asp?country=190 (which is Turkey), and change the country number, but I couldn't find South Africa that way.

Germany is the most underrated country in '70's prog scene, IMHO... Check out these bands/artists:

Eloy
Wallenstein
Kraftwerk
Cluster
Klaus Schulze
Conrad Schnitzler
Popol Vuh
Embryo
Abacus

and the ones that are already mentioned in my signature

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

AS FOR THE SEVENTIES NO WONDER THAT ENGLAND IS THE BEST IN ALL OF THE GENRES IN PROG FOLLOWED BY ITALY, US AND FRANCE WITH SHYLOCK AND HALOWEEN

TODAY, I THINK ITS THE US AND SOUTH AMERICA, EUROPE IS MORE INTERESTING IN THE METAL PROG SECTION.

WHEN WILL GENESIS REUNITE AND BRING BACK LIFE TO SYMPHONIC PROG?

no music, no life
no prog, no good life
