In my very distant youth, after the declining of my beloved bands, I started to buy Saga records, and in my opinion they are not bad. Maybe in Prog class B, but better than many other bands. Also hear some Styx, but Mr Lobotto makes revolving my stomach and never hear them animore.
Please forgive me for my crappy english!

I love Styx but only in an over-the-top cheesy 70s and 80s rock sort of way.  Saga is the highest quality progressive rock back in the 80s other than maybe Roxy Music.  Saga's synth work is well awesome as well.  It's gotta be Saga for me.

I was surprised at the beginning of my "prog archives forum career" by the fact that nobody talks about Saga, but there's a lot of talk about Rush. I allways prefer Saga over Rush (but to be honest I haven't hear many Rush albums).
Please forgive me for my crappy english!

When Equinox with Styx arrived, they became my  favorite band. But is was sadly downhill from there.Love the first 4 albums on Wooden nickel. When Saga arrived a few years later I became a big fan of their first three albums. Then they started to slide. But I have been listening to Saga a fair bit lately and it is great.Love Michael Sadlers voice and Ian Chrictons guitar is amazing.

Picked Styx ,because of Equinox.

I just saw Saga live in Toronto in August 2005. They were pretty good. But I saw Styx live in Kelowna B.C. in 1977 and they were better. At that time I wrote a letter to Tommy Shaw and James Young saying how I appreciated their performance despite some technical difficulties. They actually took the time to write a reply!

It's funny, I'm almost sure that many progheads enjoyed The Grand Illusion more than they are willing to accept.

STYX was barely (if even barely) Prog', but they were a hell of  a band.

Both bands are good, though I think Saga has held onto it's roots a bit better than Styx.  Saga has also never really been liked in the states, so I'm rooting for them.

For the naysayers above who say Styx was never prog., listen to their early albums (Styx, Styx II, The Serpent is Rising, Man of Miracles, and Equinox).

Judging Styx for Mr. Lobotto is like Judging Genesis for Wo Dunitt?  Yes for Owner of Lonely Heart or ELP for Lend your Love to me Tonight.

Why don't You go with Fooling Yourself, Miss Ameruica or Movement for a Common man?

They were only barely Prog in their first albums but did great muisic, in Cornerstone )From which Babe is) we can find Lights, a brilliant voval song with complex arrangements or Booat in the River,. a simple and beautiful song played with Balalaika.

This as simplist as saying Styx and Kansas are the same because of Dust in the Wind.

Iván

Saga all the way. Their musicianship is amazing and Ian Crichton has to be
one of the sickest guitar players out there. They utilize their keyboards
excellently as well.

None, they both suck IMHO.

Definitely Saga, a sadly underrated progressive rock band. Crichton is a great guitarist. I always wondered whether Petrucci was into his guitarwork, he has a similar approach and sound. Though Petrucci has definitely surpassed Chrichton in terms of technical ability, Chrichton consistently writes solid crunchy riffs, and nice lead/rhythm work.
