I've noticed that it's quite difficult to track the changes to the band
list, Mike, would it be very difficult for you to post the changes to
this thread, especially big changes? I saw a lot of bands were recently
transferred from Experimental to Heavy.
The changes are quite good, although now Opeth seems a bit lonely in
the experimental category... Perhaps move them to Extreme as it is a
major part of their music?

Yes, I have been making big changes ... I should have announced them first.
Here's what I did:
- The "Epic" bands (The Gathering, Devin Townsend, etc) weren't getting along with the Experimental bands. At the same time I started thinking about the Metal-Fusion bands which are currently filed under Jazz-Fusion.
- These Epic bands are similar to the Gothic/Doom bands (e.g. Dead Soul Tribe), so I decided to move Gothic/Doom/Epic to their own genre.
- I merged the Orchestral bands (e.g. Therion) to Power, which becomes its own genre (so it is also no longer named "Heavy", but "Power").
- Gothic/Doom/Epic was named just "Epic", as this is the common property of all those bands.
- I added "Fusion" to the experimental genre. Metal-Fusion bands are quite similar to the experimental bands which are already in that category.

^ I like the Epic/Doom/Gothic inclusion, but sometimes some Epic bands aren't Doom/Gothic and sometimes some Doom/Gothic Prog Metal bands aren't Epic at al..

Can you give me an example? It's obvious that some Epic bands aren't Gothic or Doom. The genre is meant for bands which are Gothic or Doom or Epic ...

Great move! This revision of prog
metal makes more and more sense the longer you work on it! Now I have
to go to bed, I've had a long evening out partying.. (altough Finland
is changing from summer time to winter time tonight, so I just got an
extra hour...) I'll continue tomorrow, I have some comments about
the fusion of fusion .

^ I don't know the bands, Kohllapse ... I can't just have a brief look at their websites and decide whether they're prog or not. Please be more patient ... we don't have to add all possible bands today.
Edit: I'm also going to bed ... let's continue this tomorrow. Please remember (all of you) that this is a work in progress, and there is no need for urgency. Just relax, sleep over it ... and tomorrow we can think about Fusion, Doom vs. Epic and where Tool fits in - that's one question that I'm still unsure of.

Tool fits in as Experimental Progressive Metal! I think Jody will agree with that.

"Bands in GRAY have not been accepted by the archives. They might be prog ... but their status has not yet been determined.. "
Could you make them BLUE instread of gray it makes them easier to distinguish.

For once I agree with KoL, although the boycott thing is childish!!
Great band, but 'Symphonic' Black Metal.

I have made some major changes:
- The color marking for non-prog bands is gone. Bands that are not in the archives are printed in ITALICS, and the fact that a band appears in the list doesn't mean anything - it may be prog related, non-prog, subject to addition to the archives or not - please don't take offense if you think that the band is not prog, or if you think that they're prog but printed in italics ... RELAX, CHILL, TAKE A PILL.
- Many people have complained about Neo bands being Symphonic or vice versa. I created a mixed genre Neo/Symphonic for these borderline cases. By moving the bands which are difficult to tax out of the Neo or Symphonic categories, hopefully the remaining bands will show more clearly where the difference is between these genres. Please tell me about any band which you think is borderline between Neo and Symphonic.
- I expanded Power, Epic and Experimental - there are now sub genres, which are only used to make it more obvious why a band is listed in a genre. Please report any errors (Gothic band listed as Doom etc.).

Interesting changes, I think it's a lot clearer now what the five
categories contain. I was just about to ask where the orchestral and
operatic bands should be, but I see they are now clearly listed. I
might have put the orchestral/operatic bands(therion, nightwish, aina,
epica, rhapsody) under epic due to the fantasy theme and epic
compositions, but this way is fine too, it is just a question of where
to draw the line. Kamelot and Blind Guardian are definaltely Power, no
question there.

I've been listening to bands in the experimental/avant-garde section. I feel Orphaned Land and Pan-thy-monium
stick out a bit, as the major part of their production is black metal.
The extreme category could be a better place, as the rest of (post)
black metal bands are currently there.

I think it's more important to finish that list than talking about colours...

I'm planning to divide the Extreme genre also ... in Death/Thrash/Black sections. Please comment on what to put where ...

Then to the fusion section... This is not a strong area for me but I'd
like to comment. After some contemplation, I find it fits quite nicely
with the bands in extremely technical metal section. But what bands
should be there? Planet X - yes, Marty Friedman - hmmm..., Niacin - no.
I don't see any metal relation in Niacin. How can a band be prog metal without a guitarist?
