As I said before, I think there's nothing wrong with all the sub-organization of genres. If someone has the time to do all this work, I think it's fine. It will make PA look more detailed and professional. On the other hand the sub organization is pretty useless because few people really care about the sub sub genres. "prog metal" or "symphonic prog" is enough for a person to know whether to research further on a band or not. All the sub sub genres will only be used by PA because no one else before cared enough to do it... which shows that wasn't necessary. And if sub organize, then it should of course be done to symphonic and prog metal, for they have the greatest diversity. There's too few zeuhl or krautrock and they're too original to be sub categorized like that. Another minus is that the sub categorization will spawn countless amounts of threads and arguments about what belongs where and what doesn't. And no one will come to any agreement because it is impossible. The borders inside a sub genre are too obscure to be able to organize them accurately. |

"WOLVERINE" are a mixture of Evergrey and Opeth!
Lots of changes in mood, hard metal passages and complex akkusticparts. They doubtlessly belong to the Avant/Experimental Section! "DYSRHYTMIA" are an extreme math-prog-metal band! AND PLS ADD "FRAMESHIFT" : (style changes from prg-metal like DT to Prog Rock à la YES and sometimes even to pop but always complex but not too much) =>NEO "MADMEN AND SINNERS" are like James LaBrie's solo works (he even sings on the cd) =>POWER "LYRANTHE" are a band equal to Fates Warning or Crimson Glory! "UNDER THE SUN" are a progressive (hard)rock band in the sense of RUSH with symphonic elements and sometimes neo-prgressive styles. They belong into the Non-Metal Section. "LEVIATHAN" are a neoprogressive rock band so NON-METAL! "WITHOUT WARNING" are a power metal band with a progressive touch! =>POWER "SONIC DEBRIS" are as well a metal band with progressive vein and combining that metal with some softer rock passages but belong definitly in the POWER section! "AVALON" ... guess... another POWER METAL BAND with progressive touch but they combine that heavy metal with ethno, interesting! => POWER PYRAMID = Ice Age |

^ Yes, they are. So they are Prog. Cradle of Filth is DEFINITELY NOT PROG. They are the carriers of the Hot Topic flag nowadays.

The old problem ... are the bands progressive or not? I marked those bands gray which are probably not considered to be progressive by the standards of this website. But you never know ...

Based on the descriptions of the genre categories , I would put SANCTIFICA,PECCATUM and KEKAL in Avant/Experimental , and CONTROL DENIED in "POWER" |

Kohl: I agree with Peccatum, but I think Control Denied, despite having strong power tendencies, have technical playing more toward the forefront than you'd expect... I wouldn't object to seeing them in power, but I'd say they're no closer to that then to Experimental (if we include Tech with that, which seems to have been done although the title doesn't really reflect that) I never hear the prog in Anacrusis, though, awesome as they are. Maybe that's just me

Wow.... Take it easy guys. I'm stunned yet again by the rapid progress
of this thread and the evolvement of the bandlist. I'm honestly
becoming very concerned about the flood gates opening for a lot of
non-prog bands. I know, the band list is not in any way a list of bands
that will eventually be included into progarchives, but I cannot be
blind to the fact that the more bands there is on the list, the more work it will take to filter out the REAL prog bands.
I mean, really, bands like Helloween, Iron Maiden, Sonata Arctica, Tony
Malcalpine, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of filth, Emperor and Lake of Tears
(among others) are not prog. We cannot stretch the prog metal category this far without serious problems!
I wish everyone who is reading this thread and following the band list
are aware of the fact that the band in this list are NOT automatically
included into progarchives, no, many are there for reference only.
So, it's ok to list many different kinds of bands (both prog and non-prog) on the list to make the division of the prog metal category (which is the prime goal of this tread) clear for everyone, but don't make this thread all about listing new (rather non-) prog metal bands. This is off topic and will cause a lot of dispute, also among prog metal fans. I'm writing this because I see the risk of many people misinterpreting the bandlist and thus getting annoyed and turning their backs on Progarchives! Edited by Progzilla |

I'll try my hardest to keep non prog bands out of the list, I judge wheather a band is prog ,not on my own opinion of the band being prog alone, i find at least 5 reviews from others to try and keep them prog only. but opinions are just opinions. Thats why i submit them here for you "Experts" to critisize and judge me.

Sorry Kohllapse, I'm trying to mediate between two worlds here. It wouldn't be appropriate if I just entered bands into those lists and marked them as prog although they haven't been accepted in the archives. People might think that I'm the one who decides whether they're accepted, which is not the case. I changed the description of the gray color ... I hope you agree with that. |

I dont expect you to put them as prog and im glad you dont just put bands as prog because someone says they are. I understand that until they are in the archives they arent prog. kidding. |

To be honest Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Emperor, Borknager, are not prog, granted they may have some proggish songs but i would not put anywhere near the prog metal category.
