The only one of Ghandi's blunders I wouldn't personally support is number 6. I could add knowledge without understanding, style without substance, form without content, laws without justice and tests without purpose, which would accurately sum up the Thatcher, Major and Blair governments in the UK. |
What the hell "Queen" does in your list?
It's not prog!!

It's interesting - I was reading an essay by Orwell on Ghandi, and the second "blunder" seems taken to absurd (clarification later ) extremes: Ghandi taught that we should not put condiments or flavourings on food because, rather than enjoying it, we should be eating purely to sustain ourselves. Now in his specific religious context (and assuming a belief that these plants have some puporse for existence other than being eaten)this is perfectly fine, but to everyone else it really is absurd - just because something is necessary, should we derive no pleasure from it? Of course the same can be said for his saying that sexual intercourse should be without pleasure, but far too many religions teach that for me to ridicule it

Floyd without waters were actually OK IMO - not brilliant, but at least they sounded like the old Floyd and put on a good live show.
Similarly, Softs without Wyatt were never quite the same but they still made some enjoyable jazz fusion, like Gong did when Pierre Moerlen took over.

"x without y" presupposes that x is a desirable thing...and in my mind, that's debatable for the majority of the examples.
Plus, not all good things require suffering or sacrifice. That's a
major fallacy that so many people have bought into for so long that it
seems to us to be a given. That's part of why things like compassion,
charity and generosity often seem so difficult for us...

Ghandi described these as the 7 Blunders Of The World:
"Seven Blunders of the World"
1. Wealth without work
2. Pleasure without conscience
3. Knowledge without character
4. Commerce without morality
5. Science without humanity
6. Worship without sacrifice
7. Politics without principle
—Mahatma Gandhi
