I think you can't say heavy prog-metal because
a lot of bands in the symphonic/experimental and extreme section are also quite heavy!

Which is the most similar popular band, and do you know them really well? Try to describe them, I really would like to learn more about them.

"Extreme" is heavier than "Heavy", that's the idea. So, unless you have a better idea, we'll stick with "Heavy".

you lost me with Dreamtheater in the neo section..
I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Dream Theater are borderline between Neo and Symphonic ... people who are more experienced in Neo-Prog than me say that they're more Neo than Symphonic. Anyway, those two genres are currently combined into one big "Symphonic" genre ... so it's really an academic question.

yes it is ...

But the discussion Neo-Prog vs. Symphonic Prog (where is the border) is a particulary hopeless one ... Echolyn, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings. Why shouldn't it be equally hopeless for Neo-Prog Metal vs. Symphonic Prog Metal?

Neo-Prog was derived from Symphonic Prog, so it's valid to just call it all Symphonic Prog ... I can live with that compromise.

^About Extol..

The track "Pearl" isn't prog at all and is a ridiculous "hit-single" kind of song. Blueprint sucks.

But the older albums like Undeceived or Burial are some kind of proggy mix between death, black and thrash. Very good stuff!

"Extreme" - very much so.

So EGO EIMI is a russian composer.
Sometimes he sounds like Dream Theater, then like Deep Purple and other times like Yes.
Sometimes when he sings it sounds like HELGE SCHNEIDER
but in russian.

Blueprint is an extremely cool album IMO and would fit very well in the Avant/Experimental genre. Although not as extreme as their previous albums, it is far from popular "hit-single" music, although the song "Pearl" could be seen that way. If you want to check them out, I recommend Synergy - their most balanced album.

Another thing: There is no Black influence ... they're a Christian Death/Thrash band. They should be considered to be progressive for that fact alone.

We might move him to RIO/Avant-Prog then.

BTW: Helge Schneider is one of the most brilliant Jazz pianists from Germany. It's quite bizarre to hear his name mentioned on a prog website in a thread about prog metal.

I get what you mean Mike but im still not comfortable with Dream Theater in Neo. Im a big fan of Marillion and have heard stuff from the other bands in the"big 5" of Neo and i dont see the comparison. Also in the More Neo desription you mention that IQ are borderline Prog metal, ive got there last album and its a million miles away from metal so i think that could do with changing as well IMO.

Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

I know they're Christian .. but that doesn't mean they couldn't have black metal influences. Musically, obviously not lyrically or ideologically. There are Christian black metal bands as well, f. ex. Antestor.

My friend has Extol's poster, and in it it actually says that Extol is a black and death metal band.

There's no denying the influences.

Sorry Logos, of course I know what you mean. I was only pointing out that they don't have a Black attitude - I forgot that this thread in particular is meant to discuss the music.

BTW: Shouldn't they be called a "white and life" band instead?

I'm not familiar with IQ, but I have Arena's Contagion and Pepper's Ghost, they're definitely close to metal. I'll consult my Neo-Prog "buddies" and see if I can present a better list of bands, maybe it becomes more evident then. But they recommended IQ as an example ...
