but maybe that's why you hate it  . I don't see how what music anyone hears whilst growing up couldn't affect their tastes in later life, at least to some degree. After all, what other points of reference do we have?

No! Bing Crosby and Jim Reeves? Give me a break.
My parents hated my music and I hated theirs.
My 16 year old son and I also generally have different tastes but we both like Runrig and Metallica (and Kicking Valentino - his band!). Surely it's a generation thing, not to like the same music as your parents.

My mom said she used to play me classical music when I was younger all the
time. I think that may have influenced my musical taste.

My dad had me listen to CTTE when i was probably 8-10, playing
Super Mario 3! There was always Yes and Genesis playing when I
was young

I've grown up with some jazz, classical, pop, and contemporary christian. I love jazz, I respect classical (don't listen to it though), hate comtemp. christian, and pop  so I'm not sure how it affected me...

My parents locked me in a closet and burned me with cigars and forced me to eat stale cheetos, so they didn't help me with my music tastes.

My mom listened only to classical and my Dad listened to R&B and Soul.
All my brothers listened to prog in the 70's and that is how I got interested in prog.

Yea my dad introduced me to music like Genesis, Yes, pretty much symphonic prog, and my mom to gentle giant, jethro tull, harmonium (all those prog bands that were big in Montreal)... But my real taste in music is in space rock/psychedelic prog rock, which I started to develop due to those bands that my parents introduced me to.

My dad listened to alot of classic rock so i was always fimiliar with
it, but my mom ALWAYS listened to country music, drove me nuts until i
eventually grew a tolerance, its like the part of my brain that hears
country music has died.
Though my mom did have good taste back in the 70's , she even recommended ELP to me.

Yeah my dad hates Yes because he says Jon Anderson has no power in his
voice and he says that they're pretentious. He also loves ELP.

hmmm, somewhat yes, and somewhat no.
my dad listened to a lot of classic rock, but only some of it was good
now as I recall, and my mom listened to nothing but Billy Joel.
One of my formative musical experiences as a child, though, was when I
stole my dad's Crash Test Dummies cassette and never gave it
back. that album is still awesome.
However, i think my music taste is my own and no one else's. It
has a bit to do with what I heard growing up, but I wasnt force fed
anything.

I now own over 100 prog records :), with those three bands being among my favorites.
