I was surprised how many of the classic prog bassists used plectrums, really.

I prefer brass picks.  The tone is much more articulated than fingers, and it just jumps right of the insturment.  Chris Squire was the master of pick playing.

Fingering is the best!

also, you have to respect anyone who can play proper slap bass.

I use 'em both...  I go fingerstyle when I want a raucous, raunchy, "live" kind of sound, and I use a pick when my sound needs to be quieter, cleaner, and muted ('cause than I can palm-mute!).  Now, when I have to switch quickly from keyboards to bass and vice-versa, I never use a pick, whatever I'm playing.  But when switching from guitar to bass and vice versa, I always use a pick!  I'm versatile!  (or so I'd like to think)

Depends on the music being played;

If the music calls for a finger style (of which there are many, of course), then that's what I go for.

When using a pick, I almost invariably use Jim Dunlop nylon picks guage .88 or 1mm, as the flexibility gives you a tactile feel that's close to fingering, with most of the attack of a pick. I find rigid picks lack feedback from the strings and are awkward (I keep dropping the things!).

Maybe they started as guitarists and then moved to the bass.  That's one possible explanations.  I know Paul McCartney (although he's not really prog) was originally a guitarist, and Greg Lake and Roger Waters also started out as guitarists (although I don't know which method either of them used).
