I am the only one of my friends that listens to prog. They dont hate it but they only listen to it when i pretty much make them listen to it.  So instead trying to convert my friends i would like the names of some proggy tracks by non-prog rock bands. I would love to tellmy friends that i can enjoy some songs by their favorite bands. thanks.

im sorry if there has been similar topics but i could not find them.

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Okay a proggy song by a non prog band is Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath. And then there's Led Zeppelin's Achilles Last Stand and no Quarter. Some friggin wicked songs come out of non-prog bands. There's a lot more too, but I don't fell like thinking. Passenger by Deftones is sort of Spacey and proggy. Yeah and also some stuf from the Doors is pretty warped and wicked, like The Soft Parade, and also The Coral are sort of Psychedelic-ish-ly influenced. I think Linkin Park are embracing their love of instrumental stuff, like try listening to Session or Cure for the Itch- they're instrumental tracks, that I think are a hell of a lot more proggy than stuff that even Pink Floyd has done. Proggy, that's a great word. also Foreclosure of a Dream by Megadeth and some Soundgarden, like Half, and some Jane's Addiction are pretty trippy too. I find that if you listen to the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, it's almost like a rock opera! I could see Queen or Pink Floyd singing that crazy stuff!

Thin Lizzy - Roisin Dubh (Black Rose)
Tool - Third Eye (classified as a Prog Metal band, but might do the trick anyway)
Mastodon - Hearts Alive
Queen - Prophet's Song
The Doors - The End, Five To One and Yes, The River Knows
Monster Magnet - Ultimate Everything (maybe a bit off this one, but still a great song from an awesome band)

With science, you can turn a frog into a Ph.D. and you still have the frog you started with.

Led Zepplin's 'No Quarter' is great!
I think that Deep Purple's 'Come Taste the Band' Album has some proggy stuff due to the influence of Tommy Bolin.
Blue Oyster Cult's 'Secret Treaties' LP - particularly the song 'Astronomy'
David Bowie - Alladin Sane LP
Zappa's - Overnight Sensation LP
The Cure's - A Forest
Golden Earring's Moontan LP
Almost any early Rush will do.

Two heads are better than one, but if you want something done right, do it yourself.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained, but better safe than sorry.

Pop singer Vanessa Carlton had a single about 3 years ago,  "A Thousand Miles", which sounded a great deal like it could be a Hogarth-era Marillion song. (Unfortunately, the rest of the album was horrid.. and it takes a LOT of effort to screw up a cover of "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones)

But as far as getting non-prog listeners to convert, start with what they already like, and draw paralells from there.

If they like Metallica, go with Dream Theatre.

If they like Dave Matthews, go with Phsih or The Strawbs

If they listen to techno, try Vangelis or Kraftwerk

If they listen to classical, go with ELP

and so on

Failing that, go with stuff that has heard radio play, and that they would recognize, as a starting point....

RUSH..Closer to the Heart, Tom Sawyer
KANSAS..Point of Know Return
YES...Roundabout, Changes, I've Seen All Good People
ELP...Karn Evil 9 (1st, part 2)
GENESIS...In a Cage, Turn it On Again

etc etc etc

I forgot one- Behold! The Night Mare by the Smashing Pumpkins

also, Twisted Logic by Coldplay is sort of space rock-y, with it's lyrics and spacey music. and High Speed by Coldlplay also.
