 Yes, they are masters of melody, hooks, clever lyrics, finely-crafted pop, and the ability to sound like any number of influential bands from rock's heyday. A terriffic, intelligent, mega-talented group!

Skylarking was one of the best albums of the 80s. They may not be prog, but there's more than enough wit, intelligence and subversion in there to keep any music lover happy.

As the world's #1 XTC fan, I beg to differ: they are prog, and belong on the site.
Their particular "prog sensibilities" may be "different" than most others - and thus they may not fit neatly into one of the five or six "major" categories here - but they are definitely not "pop" or straightforward "rock," so that only leaves one alternative: prog. True, many of the song structures are verse-chorus-verse-chorus (often with a solo thrown in). But I don't think this necessarily brands them as "pop." After all, that could be said about Supertramp and others on the site as well.
No, it's what XTC does with that structure - the approach they take to writing, execution and recording - that makes them "prog." I dare anyone to listen to English Settlement or Mummer, and to any Supertramp album (all of which I love, by the way) - including Crime of the Century - and tell me that XTC is not at least as "proggish" as that.
To quote the great John Paul Jones (no, not the Zep guy...): "I have not yet begun to fight!"

I'll cross that line: I think, old chum, that you can use all the fine words you like to describe XTC's music -- they will always be a (GREAT!) new-wave/pop/rock band to me, and NOT what I call Prog. Tis a matter of taste, but as I know this is a long-standing issue with you , I'll back off now, and you can put XTC and Yes in the ol' random shuffle, while I pair them with the Stranglers, or some such.

Well, if XTC are eventually added here, they can join bands like Talk Talk and Audience, which I really like, but would never consider progressive rock.
Talk Talk? Audience? C'mon -- you're kidding, right?
Poor Audience -- their Lunch album gets unfavourable reviews here, just because it "isn't prog enough."

Damn fine album!
Ok XTC question for any Xperts out there...
On the 'B' side of the single 'Senses working Overtime' there were two songs; 'Blame the Weather' and 'Tissue Tigers' I like those songs almost as much as the A side. Can I get them on CD??

Sure, you can buy this box for about £50 that will connect your stereo to your PC and let you record your vinyls onto MP3 files. That probably wasn't quite the answer you were looking for. Unless they're on the singles box set then the answer is probably no.
