Topic: "Orchestral" Prog Posted: October 15 2005 at 10:03 |
I can think of three examples, namely After Crying, Isildur's Bane and Univers Zero. Can anyone else think of any prog bands with an almost orchestral feel, in terms of instrumentation? Bands that get session orchestras in DO NOT COUNT.

Some of Pekka Pohjola's stuff is quite "orchestral", I guess. Can't think of any others right now...

Devil Doll, obviously! For that's not a session orchestra, they were part of the group

Well, Haggard come to my mind ... but I do not like them. The most exciting orchestral avant prog that I know is Mike Keneally - The Universe Will Provide ... but "unfortunately" the orchestra is not part of his usual band, so it doesn't meet your criteria.

I would rather call it chamber prog. apart from calling it like that, I think that the band Uzva from Finland meets the requirements of this definition since they use few accoustic instruments such violin, trombone and so on. Other bands that offer an accoustic/classic instrumentation are Godspeed You Black Emperor! , Volapuk , Cro Magnon, Art Zoyd , Karda Estra, Gatto Marte and Ensemble Ambrosius (this ensemble plays on its album the music by zappa in a broque/accousitc manner).

Two fantastic albums with an orchestral feel
il tempo della gioia by quella vecchia locanda
and il paese dei balocchi by il paese dei balocchi
lots of other italian prog examples such as several albums by new trolls but
those two are my faves and are well worth checking out if you haven't
already

Gatto Marte, Haggard (Very recommended, although some grunts might dislike you, Trouser), Rìpaille, Folque (not really a symphonic orchestra ensemble, but a nordic folk one)

I can come up with Godspeed You Black Emperor and Sigur Ros, but they're more post-rock than prog. Thinking Plague and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum use this kind of sound on some of their tracks, but definitely not all of them. As for the Atom Heart Mother suggestion, that would seem to be exactly the "rock band plus session orchestra" sort of thing that you specifically said you wanted to avoid.

Yeah, there's plenty of groups that fit this bill - Uzva, Volapuk, Art Zoyd etc all in the "chamber prog" category of things that Univers Zero might also fall under. Some others that come to mind:
Krakatoa
Far Corner
Nazca
The Muffins, sort of
Miriodor, sort of
Interesting, I thought my list would be longer. Hmm...

what about Anglagard?...I always think of them as the most symphonic of the symphonic bands...because of they aregements...specially Jördrok!

Wasn't Sheherazade with a symphony orchestra?
BJH is a good one!
