Check out some of these Citizen Fish lyrics; You were too radical, cynical, political Scarily relevant nearly 20 years on...
I just thought of 2 more greats that are missing; Misfits and Fear. |

If you consider Velvet Underground punk (I think they're more experimental than punk) then there you go. I only like "All Tomorrow's Parties" and a few more from "Velvent Underground and Nico", nothing else. Punk makes me sick. |

Velvet Underground from the list if they are punk at all. The more tolerable bands from the list+Stranglers +Clash move beyond punk. |

What no Clash on this list? Well since my fave are not there I hesitated between the Ramones (lotsa fun) Stooges (raw energy ) , but went with Talking Heads (athough not really punk, either as are the Stranglers). Edited by Sean Trane |

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Some mentioned the Stranglers; but the Stranglers are more prog than punk (indeed I wouldn't mind the addition of the Stranglers to the archives at all. They used real polyphony in some of their songs, a trait even most accepted prog-bands don't master. Their album "Black and White" definitely is a prog album).
As for my favourite punk band (and they are progressive punk, in a way): Inner City Unit. I highly recommend "Pass Out!", "Punkadelic" and "The President Tapes". Oh, and I would hardly call Joy Division a punk band. Neither are the Velvet Underground or the Talking Heads. Edited by BaldFriede |

i guess i just never really "got" punk. maybe these are just misconceptions, but it always seemed to me to be a genre more concerned about rebellion and political angst than about music. personally i never found enough musical intricacy/originality to interest me. i would say i dont like punk for the same reason i dont like grunge. it's a form of music whose central focus is not the music. honestly i'm not trying to put down punk at all, but does anybody else have this conception of punk or am i just off base?

I voted for Joy Division, allthough I never even considered that punk. Where are the Stranglers? I bought the "No more Herous" album when it came out in 1977 and I never regretted that, I still think it's an excellent album (and even give it an occasional spin sometimes), and in those days they were certainly considered punk.
