I borrowed an album from a friend a while back and thought it was pretty good.

There was one time in the early 90's that Allan Holdsworth kept winning polls for the best synth guitar player, Metheny was always second. Plenty to heard on both artists' self compiled "best of" albums
Pat Metheny: Rarum, Selected Recordings (ECM - therefore the ECM years)
Allan Holdsworth: Against The Clock (Alternity Records) - the second cd of the set is large Synthaxe recordings

Secret Stories, Off Ramp, Imaginary Day-- these albums are great. Pat
does not play convensional jazz. And each of his albums has at
least one grand piece which is so close to the prog-rock genre.
He has extensively used guitar synth-- more than any other guitarist that I have heard and I have great regards for him.

Yep! Great guitarrist! I like his "Watercolours" album most, but "Imaginary Day" is also great. There's no elevator music aestethics on his "The Sign of Four" 3CD live! Try listening it, before buying though...

everything he released in the eighties is good (he gave a brazilian feel to his jazz-rock music thanks in part to Pedro Aznar's sublime voice), then in the nineties his albums are mixed bags. His solo album 'New Chautauqua' is a solo guitar tour de force, one of the most briliant guitar solo albums. The Pat Metheny Group achieved the score for the movie 'Snowman and the falcon', with David Bowie guesting on one track. This OST is truly amazing and all Pat Meth's fans should own it. His last album, 'The way up' is a step forward towards the "prog" realm, consisting of four long tracks constructed as the movements of a symphony. Also worth checking out is his collaboration with Joni Mitchell on her live 'Shadows and light'.

The PMG albums get a bit monotonous, but Secret Story is wonderful and as Yargh said Project X (with Ornette Coleman) is amazing - sounds like a totally different musician.
As Falld Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls (with Lyle Mays) is a fine ECM album. Different Trains, a Steve Reich composition played by Metheney, is also well worth tracking down, and jazz purists will enjoy Question and Answer (with Dave Holland and Roy Hanes) even if he does use a synthaxe on one of the tracks.

Yup, he's a great guitarist but I have to admit its been the ocassional
track played on the radio that has stuck with me, the only album of his
I ever bought (can't recall the name of it here) was a bit of a
dissappointment as the music was all a bit same-y to my ears. But
you've reminded me to dig it out and give it another try.

I haven't really heard a whole lot of Pat Metheny to be honest. I don't mind what i've heard though. Generally i'm not a fan of solo jazz guitarists so for me to be interested in hearing more is something at least

I just got Offramp, after not buying any of his albums for awhile. I wish his sound wasn't so "elevator-like," because he's a really good guitar player. The one with Ornette Coleman is really good, though.
