Topic: Shine On YCD Vs. Close to the edge Posted: October 11 2005 at 12:31 |
Another "Close to the edge" face to face poll. why not?
Iīd like to read explicit arguments on this. If possible, donīt just pick one. It would really help the arguments.
Actually, I donīt really care about which is better. I think the most interesting debates start from simple and common issues whenever the counterparties really get involved.

first of all, i think the feeling will always be better and much important than the technic or the way of playing, but if you mix them and create a song with a lot of sense and technic with all the heart, it's done. and close to the edge, it's one of those, it's not only better, it's much better than "shine",, and i do love "shine". Thatīs only my opinion

Yeah, I'll go with Shine on as well. Just love Gilmore's guitar work on this one.

This is surprising. "Shine" is kicking "Closeīs" butt here.
Conclusion: Feeling and emotions are more important factors than complexity and energy in music.

You also allowed multiple votes... I love both songs, Shine on has a great feel to it and I go completly crazy when I play guitar over the track it's AMAZING. Close to the Edge has some beautiful parts in it as well...It really depends on my mood

For many years I was not keen on Shine On, and I have always loved Close To The Edge. However, over the last few years I have quite taken to Shine On, and now I have actually voted for it over Close To The Edge. It certainly has more feel to it, some excellent guitar and keyboard work, and a nice relaxed tempo. Close To The Edge is still excellent, but must take second place here methinks. A hard one to call really, Yes used to be my second fave band, with Floyd third. Now, Floyd have taken the second spot from Jon's lads. Hard to compare however as both bands are so different. Just enjoy the music! (Of course, Genesis is still my number one.)

In General I enjoy much more Shine on but i voted that they are very
different. I can't say Shine on is more EXCITING than CttE cause
sometimes i find it a bit boring. But when i'm in the right mood, i
love it! Ctte is an exciting song and very different from Shine on and
Yes is very different from Pink Floyd.
IMO Pink Floyd wasn't very progressive, whereas yes was a bunch of
virtuosos. Perhaps that's why it's often a bit too heavy for me and why
i prefer more pink floyd.

I'm completely biased because Shine On You Crazy Diamon Parts I-IX are my favorite pieces of music ever conceived. I love CTTE, but it just doesn't do it like SoyCD.

I think the fact that all of these polls have been "CTTE vs. some other epic" proves that CTTE is superior to them all.

I disagree because Shine On You Crazy Diamond seems to win this poll hands down. I'm quite surprised but I agree myself: CTTE is really great, but SOYCD is even better, exceptionally good, because... it has so much emotional depth, the form is so simple but it touches me as almost no other piece of music does. A work of true genius. Awesome!

I agree! The exact question though is "which is more exciting" and for that even of you are a SOYCD fan surely CTTE wins for the blistering guitar intro...
Anyhow as its just about my fave track I'd alweays make an argument to favour it....

I enjoy both of them on the same level; Shine On YCD is my favorite from Pink Floyd, and Close to the Edge is my favorite from Yes (and both Yes & Pink Floyd are in a tie for my favorite band) I'll agree with -bp-, and say that it depends on my mood.
I enjoy the editing and production of Wish You Were Here (the album) better than Close to the Edge (the album), mostly because of the lack of pauses at the end of songs and the connections from each piece of music to the next. (Whenever I edit compilations for myself, I spend nearly an hour editing every song to a point where they can smoothly flow; Luckily I have a burning rom that allows me to take out the two second pauses in between songs ) CTTE and WYWH are both 5-star albums, IMO!

I can't choose, both songs own in their own way (heh), so I picked "I
enjoy both...". If held at gunpoint, I suppose I'd have to side with
Shine On, but no one has brandished a firearm...yet.
