Wire and The Velvet Underground are amazing.  I went with the VU due to their massive influence on all popular music.

On a sidenote, some people on this forum are way too close minded.  As soon as they hear the word punk they have a knee-jerk reaction and think of all the stereotypes associated with the genre.  Ironically, that's probably how most people view prog.

Their output is so incredibly varied that it's hard to consider them purely punk. Phantasmagoria has progressive leanings, and certainly a psychedelic 60s edge with tracks like "Grimly Fiendish".

"Damned, Damned, Damned" is widely reported to be the very first British Punk album. The Vibrators debut was the third (where are they?) and The Sex Pistols were a lowly 3rd.

 

I'd also have included the Slits, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Nena Hagen, the Angelic Upstarts, Crass, Sham 69 and Killing Joke, with consideration given to the Clash and Subhumans (a grossly overlooked band, IMO, along with the later incarnations Culture Shock and Citizen Fish, who wrote some amazing music).

And what about Plastic Bertrand or the Monks?

...and does anyone remember who did the song "Looking through Gary Gilmour's Eyes"?



I agree with most of this I have always thought of The Stranglers as a Doors influenced band I mean La Folie(?sp) isn't too punk either is it.

Did you ever get "The Black Album" by the Dammed as well? Again not very punk.. even has violins on it

Yeah, I was another subhumans fan saw them in a little pub in Putney and they were excelent..

What about Rudimentry Peni, Discharge, Vice Squad, Rubella Ballet, in fact alot of the No Future and Crass label acts... Plus I suppose you could include some Oi bands as well..

Found out who did "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" - it was the Adverts. Cracking song with manic lyrics about a murderer on Death Row who decides that he's got no use for his eyes any more, so he donates them to science.

I never got to see Subhumans, but I saw Culture Shock many times on the underground circuit (disused warehouse gigs in London, impromtu gigs in fields in the middle of nowhere, that sort of thing), and I saw Citizen Fish at "properly organised" gigs.

All of Culture Shock's output is sterling stuff - an unutterably perfect blend of ska, punk and Dick's socio-political ramblings that are so mad they're nearly genius. I don't think you can get it on CD though.

To me, punk is also great because of the lyrics. In one hand, prog rock ALWAYS had CRAPPY lyrics. But some punk bands really did it well... I won't even say Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra (the Noam Chomsky of rock and roll) is the best lyricist ever. Instead, one absolutely GREAT song of Flipper, one of the best lyrics I ever had the chance to read. Here it is:

Bad Brains, Mother's Finest, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Fear , Nip Drivers, Jim Carroll Band, The Crumbsuckers, Hüsker Dü, X, Gun Club , just to name a few, but I voted for Dead Kennedys because (like someone else already pointed out), he was one of the primary voices of that era of culture and music ("he" being Jello Biafra, of course).

BTW, I think punk had one thing in common with prog in that its music represented a conscious attempt to produce something different, heartfelt, and emotional.  Two of the many differences are that

1.  Punk was so infused with destructive behaviour that it largely bought about its own demise through simple attrition (kind of like religious cults that preach celibacy ), and

2.  Punks's best days are behind it because the genre pretty much stopped growing after 1979 or so (IMHO).

This poll shows I guess the difference between what a Brit considers punk and an American might. To my mind e.g Talking Heads, Velvet Underground are definitely NOT punk. Of the above list the best band for me is either Talking Heads or Television, but the best punk band...and they were OK.... were the Clash. That's not me saying" I like them so put them on the list"...they were considered by many the best of what punk - at least in Britain - was about; angry young men with strong political messages, and some good tumes. Your list really is incomplete without them!!

Why are proto- and post-punk bands on the list?

And would you really want to include emo (Fugazi, for instance) on a Punk poll?

Its The Clash for me.

Not on the list but Punk credentials, although they also touched on reggae, ska & jazz. They had a talented guitarist who even had long hair (well by punk standards in '77). Saw them in '78 I think and have liked them ever since.
