What can I say? They progressively got worse. All these are very good to great, however...I bought Season's End, was unimpressed and never explored the Hogarth era any further.

My words exactly.

Except that I am still exploring the Hogarth albums, of which only "Brave" and "Marbles" even begin to hold a candle to "Script..." IMO.

/edit.

Damn.

Didn't realise this was an old topic and I'd already answered...

Oh Anorak In The Uk is by far the best live album it captures the live atmosphere at the shows!

FISH-ERA

1. Fugazi and Misplaced Childhood (tied)
2. Script for a Jester's Tear
3. Clutching at Straws

HOGARTH-ERA

1. Brave
2. Afraid of Sunlight
3. Season's End
4. This Strange Engine and Marbles  (tied) (Marbles would have surpassed TSE, andperhaps SE as well, had it not been for most of the Vol. 2 material)
5. Holidays in Eden and Anoraknophobia  (tied) (the latter could have been better, but it sounds 6. like a big promise left unfulfilled most of the time)
7. Radiation
8. Marillion.com

ALL ERAS

1. Fugazi and Misplaced Childhood  (tied)
2. Brave
3. Script for a Jester's Tear and Afraid of Sunlight  (tied)

Clutching at Straws is the best for me.

Wonderful writing, and an incredibly cohesive concept album.

In my humble opinion, the ranking of Marillion
albums is:

1. Anorak In The UK Live (2 CD version)

2. Afraid Of Sunlight (brilliant concept and more
concise than Brave)

3. Clutching At Straws (great idea and well executed
lyrically and musically-fave Fish era Marillion)

4. Anoraknophobia (contains many of my favorite
Marillion songs)

5. Marbles (2 CD version) (lovely album though a bit
sedate-Ocean Rower and other songs rank very
highly though)

6. This Strange Engine (title track plus others are
great-wish they hadn't included Message Of Love
though, sounds like an "In Your Eyes" ripoff)

7. Script For A Jesters Tear (fantastic debut though
can't get into "The Web")

8. Brave (I've tried hard to get into this album. There
are some fantastic songs, but also lots of droning
parts that seem pointless)

9. Misplaced Childhood (strong beginning and
ending but again, a bit too much droning in the
middle)

10. Fugazi (Fond memories of this album though I
don't have it anymore and haven't listened to it in
years).

The others kind of blend together, though I would
personally place Holidays In Eden down towards the
bottom of my list.

Quote the only 1 i don't have is Holidays in Eden

I am sorry to say that you are missing a very good album then!

Agreed wholeheartedly. "Dry Land" and "100 Nights" are among the finest songs the band has ever recorded.

  1. Clutching (took a while to get there, but IMO the most original sounding Fish-era album)
  2. Script (for the early Genesis fan. Too bad it has bad production and poor drumming)
  3. Fugazi
  4. Seasons End + Brave (although I severely missed the great poetry by Fish)
  5. Misplaced Childhood (learned guitar by playing along, but i've heard it too much now)
  6. Holidays in Eden (poor)

As for the rest, I borrowed some other albums and they dindn't impress me much. Should I have a go at Marbles if I liked Brave, anyone?

Fugazi 5*

Misplaced Childhood 41/2*

Script 41/2*

Clutching at Straws 4*

B'Sides Themselves 4*

Real to Reel 4*

That's all I've got. Grendel is amazing and makes up for some dodgy tracks on B'sides Themselves to raise it to 4*.
