Itīs very common people thinking "Dark side of the moon" is, or may be the best prog album ever. I have always argued "Dark side" has not a single prog sound or note. The structure of the songs are simplistic and the playing doesnīt match a single second on "Tarkus".

I think "The wall" is even less progressive. ...Well, I think there is no progressive rock whatsoever on these albums.

How big is the dogma around Pink Floyd?. Is people really aware of what they are calling progressive rock when they argue Pink Floyd is one of the best 5 progressive rock bands?.

I would say DSOTM is a prog album, don't know about The Wall as I've never heard it all but as a concept album it probably fits into the prog genre. The same arguments apply to Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (short, simple songs) but nobody doubts that is a prog album (do they?).

I would also say that PF have "crossed over" from prog into the mainstream of music. DSOTM has sold 30 million odd copies but I bet the majority of purchasers would not regard themselves as prog rock fans.

Can you really tell me that "Wish You Were Here" or "Animals" are not prog?

DSOTM is not my favourite PF album, but I would never say it's not progressive. I know on this site there is a section containing sort of guidelines on what is progressive rock, which are not as rigid as many people here would like. Of course PF's music is not symphonic prog like Genesis', but IMO it fits the real meaning of the word 'progressive'. Being prog is not only a question of writing 20-minutes songs or having classical influences. BTW, I absolutely love Tarkus, and I love PF as well...

Does it really matter what you call Pink Floyd or DSotM??
But Wikipedia seems to think both are Prog. Rock

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock

I'm not saying whoever put the above page together knows anymore than you or I but the fact that none of us can decide for sure, means we may as well just move on.

You know?, it really doesnīt matter what I call Pink Floyd. Pink Floydīs music is great and Iīve enjoyed a large part of their discography. Whatsmore, I hate that "Prog, not prog, and pop, not pop" arguments. I love Genesis and really hate when people say Genesis is now crap because they played pop since 1980. And to me, they just changed and the pop they wrote is good. Is good music. I donīt care if itīs pop or not as long as I enjoy it. I love 80īs pop and try to get everything I donīt have already. I really enjoy 60īs oldies no matter how simple they are.

I started this Poll because Iīve always felt people tend to make something much bigger of Floydīs music, than what it really is. I really think it is overrated. As overrated as any band may be when it receives such media support. Like The Beatles for example.

Still, there are albums way more progressive and much more creative and complex than "Dark side", like Metamorfosiīs "Inferno" and it is not even on the "Best prog album list" in this site. For situations like this I feel frustrated when I see "Dark side" on top of things.

They're prog as much as Crimson, Yes, ELP, you name it...

It's just that they don't play Symphonic Prog like those bands I've mentioned.

Floyd belongs to another subgenre of prog called Psychedelic/Space Rock.

So the approach they've taken to make music is different as, say... the one ELP took, just like you've compared.
