DREAM THEATER A Change Of Seasons
Review (Permanent link) by AngelFiend @ 3:47:07 AM EST, 2/25/2004 Wow! This song was written to be in "Images And Words" but at the last time they didn't record it... What a pity! This EP is a good EP, but only for the 3 first songs, if they recorded the songs from the medlyes in their integral version I would put a 5 stars rating!

DREAM THEATER Falling To Infinity
Review (Permanent link) by bogdan @ 9:55:12 AM EST, 3/31/2004 My favourite DR album. This is a prog album with jazz influences. The keyboards are very intelligent. All DR albums are special but this is close to my heart. Some people dont like this album cause it didnt sounded like Images And Words or Awake. well each one of us has their own taste in music."Trial of tears" are a prog masterpice.
DREAM THEATER Falling To Infinity
Review (Permanent link) by scott @ 5:34:07 PM EST, 9/8/2005 An intresting album with some really posotive qualities, and some not... This is due to two things; a nazi-like record company who would not let them do everytihng they wanted to( the shortened songs, pushed for a more radio freindly song, and was too controlling on everything else) and their attepmt at another sound that wasnt up to their standards. A great opener and a great closer, but some weak songs in the middle. However, this album has a very orignal sound where you can barely hear any influence form any band, unlike their other albums ^This one too?

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (AND THE MAGIC BAND) "Trout Mask Replica"
Review (Permanent link) by Ant Man Bee @ 8:08:51 PM EST, 10/3/2005 Just as there are people who think Picasso didn't know how to draw (myself included, until I took a look at some of Picasso's early sketches years ago and realized that he did know), there will no doubt be people who think Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band can't play music. I dare those people to pick up a guitar and TRY to play any of the songs on "Trout Mask Replica" note for note. Of course, jokesters will take up the dare, making random noise and atonal squawks, but once you realize that the music on "Trout Mask" was INTENTIONALLY written in this manner, even the most spiteful cretin will simply have to shut the f**k up and realize that Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band are superior artists who successfully created Cubist music out of the remains of free jazz, Delta blues, and Imagist poetry.
Cubism is the art movement that Picasso popularized, and it had to do with viewing multi-dimensional perspectives simultaneously. Thus, Picasso's Cubist figures have 3/4 profile eyeballs on the sides of their heads, almost the way Egyptian hieroglyphs distort the eyes when drawing profiles. The musical equivalent would be to have three or four different instrument parts (in different meters and styles) competing in the same linear space of one song-- kind of like being in a parking lot before a concert and hearing the stereos of several cars mixing together to create a new, bastardized version... which is what The Flaming Lips did on their album "Zaireeka". The fact that The Lips get applause for this move while Beefheart remains relatively obscure underscores a uniquely American trait: giving credit for originality not to the originators but to the imitators. I like The Flaming Lips, but knowing that "Trout Mask Replica" did it three decades earlier only makes me like Beefheart's music even more. It was the most original American music made prior to the "invention" of rap music, but because rap is all about "the beat" it has a wider appeal. However, everyone from Tom Waits to The Butthole Surfers to Devo to The Minutemen owe Beefheart a huge debt. This album is perfect in my estimation, but many will disagree. |

COLLEGIUM MUSICUM "Collegium Musicum Live "
Review (Permanent link) by Jan Vlček @ 8:06:44 PM EST, 10/3/2005 All Collegium Musicum music - records and concerts - is/was excellent, breakthrough, unprecedented and unique alloy of rock and classical music, fruit of Varga's brilliant and inventive mind. During the "dark age" one of few light points in state controlled culture. Marian Varga is one of great spirits - victims of communism. This live album is the best of all CM recordings. Unfortunately I can give only 5 stars, this LP deserves at least 10!!!

See how easy it is to make reviews? You just type in some inepsies and then copy the whole thing to the whole catalog of that band. |

GENESIS "Foxtrot"
Review (Permanent link) by s d @ 8:16:15 AM EST, 10/4/2005 I am sick and tired of listening to you old folk talk about how you don't enjoy quality acts such as Dream Theater. One reviewer said it's not to his taste...ok then that's fine. So let me have my say now. If i want to fall asleep or have a good laugh, I'll listen to Yes or Genesis or Pink Floyd (etc). C'mon you oldies...this music is not as great as you all say it is. I am a 25 year old bachelor of music composition graduate and have been playing the keyboard, guitar and drums for a little over 10 yrs, so I AM a musician, unlike most of you. But instead of going into a lengthy essay about why this music is just plain boring, I'll just do what so many of you people do and say 'it's not to my taste'. So there you have it, I voiced my opinion and I don't care if you don't care but I am honest to God when I say that crappy old school prog rock bores me to tears and no matter how many times I listen to Yes' 'Close to the Edge', I will never understand why you guys get boners over it. The music is nothing earth shattering. But it's fine, if you oldies get so excited and this sorta stuff makes your hair stand up...well that's fine...but seriously now, just make sure you know there are educated musicians like myself who simply find it all boring.
Steve. ^ delete this, it isn't at all a review about the album!!!

IMO this could have been a valid opinion if he only tried to explain what he did not like in this music instead of general dismission of "old folks". So get 'im out by Friday Maybe a silly question: sorry I do not know how to paste entire article in html into the post here, like many of you do? Can you give me a hint? |

DREAM THEATER "Train Of Thought"
Review (Permanent link) by Micah Fleck @ 1:49:01 AM EST, 10/6/2005 So many people here have reviewed ToT to be the worst DT album of all, and I have to dissagree 100%.
Honestly, this is by far my favorite of all of DT's albums to date. Sure, it's not like the others. So many people will bitch about how it's not symphonic enough, or not prog enough. However, the bottom line here is this: get rid of DT's reputation as a prog band for a moment, and look at from the point of view that this is more of a metal album, and you come to find that it's *gasp!* Reallly gooooooooood. So many fans were dissapointed because they don't like change. DT's genious shows through in this album simply because they took the risk of making a metal album. But in my opinion, they passed with flying colors. Others think otherwise, but that is because they only preffer classic DT, and are probably not metal fans in the first place. Yes, you will probably have to be a metal fan in order to enjoy this album, because that's what it is. There is no way around the fact that ToT IS a full out metal album with some prog aspects going for it. So, it's a metal album, is that neccicarily a bad thing, per se? I mean, come on, folkes. The songs are good. I want to bang my head everytime this album plays. I'm a big DT fan, and enjoy the classic DT sound. But ToT is my favorite DT album to date because, well, it's so different, which once again shows that DT truly aren't afraid to be different for a change. In fact, until ToT, DT's albums were beggining to become repetitive in my opinion, so it was time for a change. This change was good. A treasure to anyone who truly appriciates DT's versatility. |

That one seemed OK to me Cygnus. Bit weak on the detail of the album, but there's been a lot worse. Anyone else have a view on it?

I think we have room for that sort of review. You wouldnt want more than one of them per album but as a "context explanation" of the perceptions of DT it's ok. (I'm not even sure that what I've just written is even English!) |

You're right, there have been worse. And if you really want to keep it, you can, but as Tony said, just keep one of this type. I feel it should be deleted because it is very vague in terms of the albums details, besides it of course being more metal oriented. |

I can understand why cyggie put this here but I loved reading this. I'm a big fan of the Allan deBotton philosophy-babble about mixing up art forms and linking Beefheart to Cubism is an interesting idea. |

NIGHTWISH "Oceanborn"
Review (Permanent link) by Carter @ 6:17:03 PM EST, 10/6/2005 Great album. I do not see how anyone can say they are not prog metal. Tarja`s vocals are amazing, she is the best prog-metal vocalist i have ever heard male or female. Her and guest singer Wilska have excellent vocal interchanges on pharoah sail to orion and devil and the deep dark ocean. Amazing composition and good musicianship. Once again great album
I dont know how much details a proper review should have but im getting tired of the reviews wich basically says Oh great songs, great music, great compositons, great vocals and stuff like that without explaing what it is that makes them great
