I have played piano for about 9 or 10 years so im not exactly a begginer at that but i am looking to experiment with some synths. Basically what are some good synths to mess around on and get a feel for them. So it would need to be not hugely expensive. Any recommendations?

Nobody else? Okay, then...get a Roland Juno 106. It was my first analog, and it has all the basic synth options (LFO, VCF, VCA, etc.) without being too pricey or complicated. Ebay always has them for decent prices, and you can find some even better bargains if you shop around.

If you don't need a 'real' analog synth, try a virtual-analog like Korg's little Microkorg- a great deal with options that will have you playing around for months. There even some sample-based synths that are worth checking out; Roland's JX-305 is great for hands-on control & good analog-ish sounds.

For the cheapest route, get a keyboard controller for your PC and download/ buy some virtual synths. It's not as hands-on, but you'll never run out of sounds to experiment with.

That is what I am doing now as well as running it through a Yamaha electronic Piano.  It has some decent (not great) samples on it, (The Yamaha) but the action is not good.  But I love the controler's action as it has weighted keys so it feels like a piano. It was only like $350 with cables.

Hi,

You can have a lot of fun with old FM synths as well. Keep an eye on ebay, there are a few going cheap, as they are a bit outdated now. I bought a Yamaha FB-01 for £10.00, a Yamaha Sequencer for £0.99, a Yamaha TX 81 for £45.00 and a PSS 680 keyboard/synth for £20.00. Just needed to buy some MIDI and connecting leads, and found a patch editor on the web!

 

Having loads of fun now
