OK... well if you don't know by now, I am a DJ at my college's student
radio station, and every semester we do a fund raising drive during
which each show has a "special theme" and we take pledge donations from
listeners. So that week I'm going to call my show "Metal vocals
suck! ...an exploration into instrumental metal".
However, I need some suggestions for good things to play. I already have all-instrumental bands like Pelican and Red Sparowes lined up, as well as Liquid Tension Experiment, The f**king Champs, Dream Theater (of course), Porcupine Tree, and a couple other possibilities. So, what other good instrumental metal pieces are there? I posted this here because I'm open to non-prog metal as well, but I need to stay away from popular commercial bands like Metallica, etc.(this is an independent radio station after all!). I have a 2 hour show to fill, and I want to make it listenable so I can get as many pledges as possible. thanks! |

Karma to Burn! Second best stoner metal ever, and all instrumental apart from their first record! After Kyuss of course, and I think they have the odd instrumental piece too, but not all that many and the ones that are tend away from metal. An indepedent group who sound like a proggier version of KtB are Biblical Proof of UFOs, on their first record anyway.
Moving away from stoner (!), I think long stretches of Frederik Thorensen(sp?)'s Special Defects is instrumental (and bloody good as well!). Some modern King Crimson is quite metallish and instrumental. I'm sure there must be some instrumental Melvins although I couldn't point to individual songs at all. Mattias Eklund does some instrumental guitar wizardry, when not playing in Freak Kitchen (who aren't instrumental, but do rock!). I'm sure MikeEnRegaliacan point you in the direction of some more "guitar heroes".
Spastic Ink, are of course neccessary, as will Machinations of Dementia be when it's recorded (for now: http://www.spasticink.com/rjsynaptic2.wmv is a demo recording, if you like it it's probably simple enough to extract the audio only, if not I can do it for you).
I hope that's a little to get started with

sweet! thanks guys, keep 'em coming if you think of more,
I was definitely thinking of using some Spastic Ink, and I knew there had to be some instrumental Maiden somewhere. Many of these suggestions sound great. Hopefully I can find them. I am trying to shy away from solo guitar stuff like malmsteen, Vai and stuff of that nature, but I definitely have plenty of that if I need to use it. thanks again! |

...and add to that Mekong Delta - Night on a Bare Mountain (I believe they've done a fair few recordings of other 19th century works - their album "Classics" is full of them and I think the only MD CD readily available!

awww... it's just a joke, guy. cheer up. ![]() but, honestly, it's the complaint I most often hear about metal, and it's often my complaint with certain bands. It's always "wow, the music's good, but I think I would enjoy this a bit more if the singer would just take it down a notch maybe..." |

Vinnie Moore's debut "Mind's Eye" has to be the best guitar hero album there is.
I also used to like the Mekong Delta collection "Classics". |
