Some of thier earlier stuff was respectable (good). But thier lastest effort is quite bad. That one song commerical radio plays over and over again is decent, i think.

Fact of the matter is we need bands like Greenday around, to affirm that progressive music is king.

I think in fact, salmacis, that Billy Joe cites The Buzzcocks as one of his influences!

I'm 17 at present and I can safely say that I really do not like Green Day at all. I see no reason why I should listen to a track called 'Geek Stink Breath' over something called 'Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers', for example- even the title of your average prog song is more challenging and innovative than Green Day's whole back catalogue, in my opinion.
However, it's unfair for me to single out Green Day alone; although I like most old school, 70s punk/garage rock, the modern punk/indie bands leave me cold and show no real innovation- everyone seems to rip off The Buzzcocks, The Sex Pistols, XTC, Gang Of Four or Joy Division now, without adding anything new to the original blueprint.

Green Day writes good pop-rock, it's not meant to be challenging or progressive, but as entertaining to as many people as possible. Their sound is exactly what they want it to be, therefore they are very good at what they do.

I'm one of those who feels that being a hardcore prog lover doesn't mean dismissing other more simple styles ... Green Day are not in my Top 200 or so artists and I do think about 2/3 of what I've heard is lousy, but I must say that the band have their moments ... I'd certainly much rather listen to them singing When I Come Around, Warning or Time Of Your Life than hear what I consider to be bad and overblown prog (Transatlantic is the one that sticks to mind) ... oddly enough GD seem to me to be getting better with time ... I thought those multi-part songs on the most recent album American Idiot weren't bad ...

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

Oh, how the pressure from society's view's of what is trendy and what is not, must be hard on her. I suppose it would only be unnatural for a 14 year old girl to appreciate something like Spock's Beard. Don't give up on her.
In my previous post, I purposedly pointed out that you would be capable of teaching her about real music, and didn't make it clear that you were excluded from the "cycle". How provocative I am . From that little list, I'd say the "cycle" doesn't apply to you.

I like all of green days work. It's simple yes, but its catchy and energetic. Billy Joe is an excellent lyricist, and the rthymn section is pretty decent if you listen without a critical mind (which i fear is near impossible for prog fans)
Different strokes for different folks. It doesn't have to be complex or musically adventerous for me to enjoy it. just my 2 cents.

Their early stuff isn't all that bad, it's just when their most recent
album came out, everybody started to say that they liked Green Day form
the beginning, when I bought Dookie and Nimrod on the days that they
came out (this was before I discovered Prog Rock).

That's okay. Most younger kids are into simpler and lighter music. Usually that music isnt good at all, but that's just how it goes. Another problem is than nobody wants to promote the good music, what is promoted is the bad music. The tremendous amount of all this pop-punk merchandise just freaks me out
If you succeeded getting her into Beatles, try Creedence Clearwater Revival(might seem strange, but I heard some green day fans liking them)
Rolling Stones, AC/DC, and Kiss. They are not as complicated and are waaaaaaaaay easier to get into then Yes or Genesis.
If These do well, then try Zeppelin and Deep Purple(IMO, Led Zep is the greatest band of all time ) Starting with prog is easier with most "poplike" bands, like Asia or late Genesis.

Perhaps you should consider teaching your daughter about real music, and thereby breaking the cycle(parents with crappy music taste have kids who likes crappy music, who have kids...) before it's too late.

The first greenday album "dookie"(i think ) isnt that bad, pop isnt a four letter word . You shouldnt hold peoples tastes against them though, just embrace it . That beign said, welcome! If you like those bands youll love it here.
