Guys:

OK, I've listened to some of the sample MP3's from the groups you suggested, and here are my thoughts:

Anglagard - Jordrok is great stuff!  Do they have vocals on Hybris, or is it all instrumental?

Flower Kings - Love them, probably my favorite band of the 90's on... Why?  Good songwriting, memorable melodies, Wetton-esque vocals, great musical depth/variety/expression.

Glass Hammer - Like it a lot, sounds like ELP, but vocals are hit or miss IMO.  Run Lisette is a masterpiece, though!

Discipline - Good sound, but I am personally not into the Kobain/grunge vocal style...  But very impressive musically!

Italian prog - Absolutely love most of it I have heard -- big, bombastic, majestic, classical sounding stuff...great variety.  If I could find some ItalProg with the vocal harmonies a la Yes, I'd be delighted!

Earth and Fire - I like the one E&F download song a lot...moody soudning, almost like Crimson.  I'll have to hunt around for more of this.

BJH - Mockingbird is a good song...you were right, all the elements except crazy time signatures, but a solid sound from them.

After Crying - Sorry, I just can't get past the bad english accent...it really ruined it for me, plus I did not think the melody was all that.

More later...

Brian

Anglagard do have vocals on some of the other tracks, although they're in Swedish.

Glass Hammer vocals improve a lot on their most recent album, The Inconsolable Secret (but the lyrics don't).

ProgTologist:

I downloaded the sample song on the Tangent page...good stuff, powerful!  I'll see if I can hunt down the album online somewhere...

I really enjoy the Flower Kings, so I'll check out Stolt's older stuff if I can find any.

Actually, I went to the best local CD store in town hunting for some prog, and found the Deluxe Edition of Spartacus by Triumvirat.  I really like it -- ELP-style keys, good vocals, memorable melodies and lyrics...in all, an enjoyable album.

DarkSide:  I downloaded the two Renaissance tunes from their page, and I really do like it.  Different, and intruging, but as you say, the selling point is the beautifully crafted melodies... I like it!

Also, I do like Le Orme, as well as most of the Italian Prog.  The Italians seem to have an ear for pretty melodies, and less tolerance for "weird" stuff, which is right up my alley.

Give me a simple but well-written melody any day over complex but forgettable noodling...

Thanks for the suggestions -- I'll check out some Greenslade  (if nothing else, I know I like the Dean cover on at least one of their albums!)

Here are the elements I like to have in a prog band/song:
- Strong presence of Moog/mellotron/heavy organ
- Strong vocal harmonies (no one can touch Anderson-Squire in my book!)
- Memorable melodies/songwriting
- Epic songs, shifting time signatures
- Bombastic, huge orchestral endings

Those qualities are an almost perfect definition of Italian prog, so I strongly recommend you some key albums:

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso: BDMS, Darwin!, Io sono nato libero

Premiata Forneria Marconi: Storia di un minuto, Per un amico, L'isola di niente

Le Orme: Uomo di pezza, Felona e Sorona

These are the most famous. Also, you can try:

Il Balletto di Bronzo: Ys

Museo Rosenbach: Zarathustra

Il Rovescio della Medaglia: Contaminazione (pure classicism)

Metamorfosi: Inferno

Il Volo: Essere o non essere?

Alusa Fallax: Intorno alla mia cattiva educazione

Alphataurus: Alphataurus

I suggest you to start with BDMS, PFM or LO.

Hi Brian! Hybris does have vocals in the other three cuts; the followup album Epilog is all-instrumental (and IMHO is the better album, but opinions seem to be pretty evenly split over that debate).

Glad you like this stuff. A lot of the Italian prog bands I know have lead vocalists with such strong presences (ie Banco, Locanda Delle Fate etc) that vocal harmonies seem almost unnecessary Trying to think of some... hmm... nothing's coming to mind right now.

I don't know what you listened to but only AC's first album and later albums (ie NOT their best albums) have vocals in English. Try any of these albums: Megalazottak es megszomoritottak, Fold es eg, or De Profundis - vocals are all in Hungarian (and are beautiful) and the melodies are much stronger than on the later albums (basically 6 and onwards).

ProgMandolin, here are my recommendations:

(the new gems)

Little Atlas - "Wanderlust"

Taal - "Skymind"

Hamadryad - Everything (although they're a lttle on the hard side, don't know whether you'll like it or not)

(the old gems)

Indian Summer - "Indian Summer"

Raw Material - "Time Is..."

Bubu - "Anabelas"

These bands are in the archives, and another very good young band

Gargantua - s/t

http://www.ptde.org/~tylda/tylda/gargantua/en.html

you'll find some mp3s there

Enjoy

You have had loads of replies to your post and by the looks of it you will have many quality hours listening ahead of you. I couldn't resist it though, try 'Softs" by Soft Machine, a LEGEND of an album. There is no singing on it but on an album like this, there is no need.If you find the time you should definetly check it out.
