Pink Floyd for me. I think everything else that's been mentioned. Now don't get me wrong, I do like Pink Floyd, but I think they are hyped up way too much. For example, I think Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Tull, or any of the other "bigger" prog bands are much more advanced than Floyd was. That is only my opinion, keep in mind. |
In a thread called " I just don't Like it", you name a band you do like?

Dream Theater (I tried but I don't really like them, I hate they way they use keyboards) and all that metal stuff except Tool (and A Perfect Circle). I'm into grunge and alternative music but I can't stand metal, I don't know why...

It certainly confuses when people start comparing Rudess to the Emerson's and Wakeman's of this world cos' there is simply no comparison. As for Dream Theater, I don't mind them and like lots of thier material. 'Octavarian' is an awesome song but the rest of the CD is just ideas pinched from other bands....plaigarism!!!!

I've tried Yes, ELP, and Genesis at various stages, but they just all mostly bore the crap outta me. Yes has the best chance of becoming a band i like after listening to Close To The Edge, but even that wasn't that fantastic. It was really nice, but not much else. I'm more into the experimental side of prog rock. Please excuse any ignorance i have shown in this post

I know, hence inclusion on this thread. I REALLY REALLY REALLY should
love them, but after 3 or so listens to Hopes and Fears I was just left
cold. Don't ask me why 'cause I don't understand it myself.

Oh well... I never found a true prog band which I didn't like. But there are two "almost-prog" bands here at this site which I tried so hard to like (I even did listen to all their albums) and simply didn't like at all: Queen and Supertramp. Although I respect their work, their talents and musicianship, I simply cannot understand how they appeal for so many people when I cannot stand to listen a full Queen/Supertramp album from the beggining to the end. Maybe they have some hidden charm which I simply cannot get, maybe they are simply overrated by their fans. The simple fact is: I just don't like it.
But there always is a hope: I thought exactly the same way about Roxy Music and Univers Zero 15 years ago, and now I like both bands. So I think that I someday will try Queen and Supertramp again...

Snow Dog, I do not think they are prog... This is the reason for calling them as "almost prog" (well, they are here, so there must be some people who actually think of Supertramp as a prog band - no problem, but they will not make me change my opinion).

I would'nt consider Queen as prog rock.Opera rock or mainstream maybe. The point is that its amusing that there are bands that we "feel" we should like for some reason and its all down to personal taste.I have tried to like ELP and KIng Crimson, but found them not to my taste.Mars Volta have some nice moments but.....anyway thanks for the input

That's quite a broad selection. So you don't like bright prog,
simplistic and accessible prog, dark prog or complex prog? At least,
that's how it seems. Just so I know, what bands DO you like?
