That's a fairly ignorant opinion.

VDGG ( they have their moments but are way too few)  and Styx

I find it difficult to understand why some prog fans  can't handle Pink Floyd Genesis ELP or Yes> They are genre defining bands and in my circle they were widely loved.bb

How wonderful to be so profound

I can appreciate the talent of Emerson and Palmer, as musicians, but don't think the music is up to scratch, for a three-piece they don't seem to be particularly together either. Sloppy may be a word I could use. Anderson (Jon) Anderson (Ian) Peter Gabriel, Steve Hogarth, Peter Nicholls, Roine Stolt, John Wetton, Dave Gilmour - all these singers have something memorable about their voices. They may not all be technically good singers, but their voices suit the bands they are in, and the songs they sing. And they are distinctive. Well, to me they are. I can recognise them anywhere!  Greg Lake sounds quite wimpish to me, and doesn't stand out at all. He could be one of a number of so-so singers. Of course, I know fans of the band love his voice, and, for them, maybe he is very distinctive. Not to me though. His voice to me is, well, weak, therefore inferior. Each to his or her own though. I think the band could have accomplished so much more if they had added at least one more musician. Maybe a singer/guitarist.

ELP = showmanship. But, showmanship does not necessarily = good music.

Rush (except for maybe a dozen songs), Ayreon, Flower Kings (and I really wanted to like them!), Ozric Tentacles (though I understand why many people like them), Happy the Man.  I'll think of others, I'm sure.

Peace.

It's not that I "can't handle" Genesis or Floyd, its simply that I don't like their sounds much. They're no more "genre defining" than King Crimson or Van Der Graaf Generator (the latter's influence is so often downplayed) and I couldn't give a monkey's how they were received in "your circle". Musical taste is a subjective matter and everyone will come across bands that they may feel they OUGHT to like, but for one reason or another lack the charm others find in them.

Styx and Kansas.
Arguing on the internet is a lot like the special olympics - even if you win, you're still retarded.

I have gotten into everything, really. The only time I give up a band is when they're too poppish for me, but never because they're too complex.

I love KC, Rush, GG, and most of those other people named

ELP and Dream Theater.Dead

Dream Theater are all style over substance and ELP are a one trick pony. The keyboard player plays like he is wearing boxing gloves( (c) TR1972) and the vocalist sounds like he's just been punched with them and then collapsed onto the drum kit......

Dream Theater: What's all the fuss about?!?? Like a spoiled teenager driving a fast car that Daddy bought them. All style, and no substance...

Also Kansas, Zappa and up until recently Gentle Giant.

I have given up on Kansas and Zappa, but I have since purchased GG's "The Power and The Glory" and "Freehand" and will be locking myself in a room with them until I 'get' them...
