What is the most gripping lyric-line you have ever heard? Some of them can really make you cry, and someone can make you want to break something......
A reunion.......it will never happen in my lifetime!!

"...As they nibble the fruit of my flesh, I feel no pain; only a magic that a name would stain..."

I've always loved that last phrase.

Well staying on this Genesis track...there are a few:

"I would welcome a horse's kick to send me back, if I could find a horse not made of sand."

"Now as the river dissolves in sea, so Neptune has claimed another soul" and finally,

"You're old and disillusioned now as you realize at last, that all you have accomplished here will have soon all turned to dust."

I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

"...so if you want my address, it's number one at the end of the bar. There I'll sit with the broken angels clutching at straws, and nursing our scars. Blame it on me, you can blame it on me..."

- from Sugar Mice

Actually, all the lyrics on this record are just fantastic (Clutching at Straws by Marillion), it's probably my lyrical favorite, with In Absentia (PT) and Sunsets on Empire (Fish) close behind.

I cannot say just one gripping line, there are so many for me...here's a few:

"so the pride/of little men/the burghers good and true/still living thru the painter's hand/request you all to understand" KC - The night watch

"And they're giving me a wonderful potion/'cause I cannot contain my emotion" and "This is the supper of The Mighty One/Lord of Lords, King of Kings/has returned to lead His children home/to take them to the new Jerusalem" Genesis - Supper's ready

"coming quickly to terms of all expression laid/as a moment regained and regarded both the same/emotion revealed as the ocean maid" Yes - And you and I

there are too many to list

"my kingdom for a horse!" (W. Shakespeare, "Richard III")

One of my own favourites are the following by Pain of Salvation:
"Let me drain! Let me die! Let me break the things I love I need to cry! Let me burn it all! Let me take my fall! Through the cleansing fire! Now let me die!"

And of course the whole lyric on "A trace of blood" from Remedy Lane

A reunion.......it will never happen in my lifetime!!

I absolutely love these lines from Porcupine Tree's "Deadwing"

And from the yellow windows of the last train, a spectre from the next life breathes his fog on the pane.

I look with you into the speeding black rain, afraid to touch someone, afraid to ask her for her name.

And in the morning when I find I have lost you, I throw a window open wide and step through...

Whenever I hear these opening words............"Oops I did it again" I drop to my knees and pray directly to the lord- and thank him for the talent that amazing person displays.

OK- done with the cynical remarks....for now.

I love every single one of Jon Anderson's lyrics. Especially the line I use on my signature.

One thing I'd like to add to the list would be this priceless gripping line from Pink Floyd's Breathe: "All you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be." Simple and true.

Oh BTW, guys, check out this poll if you haven't yet:

Hey lady--you got the love I need
Maybe more than enough.
Oh Darling... walk a while with me
You've got so much...

Many have I loved - Many times been bitten
Many times I've gazed along the open road.

Many times I've lied - Many times I've listened
Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.

Many dreams come true and some have silver linings
I live for my dream and a pocketful of gold.

Mellow is the man who knows what he's been missing
Many many men can't see the open road.

Many is a word that only leaves you guessing
Guessing 'bout a thing you really ought to know, ooh!
You really ought to know

Over the Hills and Far Away by Led Zeppelin ( i know they're not prog)

and of course

The elements that gather here
Upon this hill shall cast no fear
Of lines that match across the world
For travel which no man has ever heard

The moon that shines its beam so bright
Of stones that measure the silvery light
Of energy that travels here
It happens on the seventh year

From the realms beyond the sun
Here our lifetime has begun
Perhaps to die
A day shall come, we shall be as one

"And that's how the high command, took my daddy from me."

When the tigers broke free - PF

That line is very said, but sung in a kinda angry tone.

It will bug me until the day I die that When the Tigers Broke Free didn't make it on the album.
