Topic: WORST Octavarium Song Posted: September 09 2005 at 18:16 |
I've rated this album with 3 stars.
I think the song "Octavarium" is a magnificent piece of music, even though you can easily recognize all the direct influences it have from some 70's prog dinosaours.
All the rest of the album is almost disposable, with the exception of two good prog metal songs ("The Root of all Evil" and "Panic Attack") and an O.K. one ("Sacrificed Sons").
IMO the one song is almost HORRIBLE is "These Walls". Now's your turn, make your choice NOW!.

MY vote goes to Octavarium ... they could have done the song in 10 minutes, but they had to add the damn noodling PF references in the beginning, the boring and needlessly complex chord progressions in the second part and the pompous ending ...

It's not a joke ... maybe I exaggerated a bit, but I really think that it's the worst song on the album.
- The noodling on the keyboard in the beginning is nice, but uncalled for.
- The following Shine On You Crazy Diamond reference also makes no sense to me. Dream Theater's other albums contain little (if any) PF references, so what's the point? Were they trying to say "Listen to this, we can sound like PF if we want to"?
- Then the vocals kick in ... and that part has overly complex chord progressions. In my subjective opinion the complexity is also uncalled for here. It's like they were trying to make this the most complex "simple" song ever.
- After that a complex riff on the bass introduces the first part of the song that I really like. I really like how the epic evolves from here, and everything is alright until the "outro".
- In the outro we essentially get the noodling from the beginning on the guitar.
Mind you, I actually like the album AND the song. It's just not as good as their other albums. I'd rate Octavarium 3 stars as an album and 2 stars as a song.
BTW: The most alarming signal that the song is bad is that most people who don't like Prog Metal (and DT in particular) say that they like that song ... it simply isn't DT. It's against everything that I&W, Awake or Scenes stand for.

Octavarium is a dull song- takes WAY too long to get going. I always fast forward the first 10 minutes or so.
