MY MOTHER DOESN’T LIKE (ALMOST ALL)PROG!!

Yes, my father found the prog boring, and believe is music for crazy people...

i dont understand him...

sometimes he says that he likes yes or pink floyd, but most of the time when i play my music he wish to trash them

When I was 16 and playing in a Heavy Metal band, we were trying to write a 'concept track' based around Manowar/Vanom and other such classy acts  and the guitarists mum said if you want to learn about concept tracks and albums you should listen to 'The days of future Passed' We laughed and said 'That crap!' Not that we had ever heard it!

Now I know what she means, I'd love to meet her again and tell her she was right all along!

My mother actually LIKED 'and then there were three' by Genesis, and bless her, hated Phil collins solo stuff!

She also liked 'The Spirit of Radio' but nothing else to my knowledge, unless she used to play my Hawkwind albums when I was out, but I cant imagine it..

My dad was a prog fan when he was a teen, his favorite bands, maiinly symphonic, were Genesis, Pink Floyd, Caravan, Gentle Giant, Mike Oldfield and stuff like that... He also liked 'weirder' stuff, like Zappa and Tangerine Dream, he had tons of LPs but... he all sold them away a while back.  He also like some music I showed him, he love Explosion in the sky.

The most surpriseing is that I didn't knew it until I talked music with him, and he was like 'Hey, I had all the albums of those bands, etc...' I couldn't believe it...

My mom doesn't care much, she even likes KC ITCOTCK...

My father's vast record collection mainly consists of progressive rock and other good music. But lately I've been seeing A LOT of country.

He's betrayed me....

My mother once told me she loved Jethro Tull when I was listening to Aqualung, and that she used to listen to them when she was young. I once showed my father (who is a fan of latin/classical guitar) Steve Howe's solo Yes pieces, and he said that they were quite good. I hope to show him Steve Hackett's Metamorpheus to see what his opinion is on that.

As for the rest of my family, my cousins all listen to prog. My older cousin got me into ELP, and he really digs KC and Genesis. And my uncle (who is the cause of me liking Prog) absolutely loves Rush and Yes.

Well my mum has a couple of Moody Blues records, a Gensis single and a Phil Collins solo album

My dad has The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon and used to have Wish You Were Here all on vinyl. He's heard Faust (not sure what he thinks of them) and probably has some other prog records that i can't remember right now.

But neither of them listens to that stuff anymore and they listen to a fair amount of garbage between them. I wouldn't call them prog fans, even though they like some of it.

As far as not liking my music goes... well my dad likes some of the metal stuff i listen to, my mum appreciates Symphony X and Dream Theater, doesn't mind Uzva, and a number of other things she's heard me listening to. However my mum has understandably called Gong "weird", she doesn't like the more extreme metal stuff i listen to, and my dad has expressed his surprise in me listening to Bjork. My dad actually has a very open mind when it comes to music though so he doesn't really hate any of the bands he's heard me listening to. Although i do remember him walking into the room when i was listening to The Camera Eye by Rush and saying "what the hell are you listening to?"  Geddy's voice took him by surprise i think.

You're not supposed to like music that your parent's like anyway!

It's gone full circle in my house - my kids complain about my music. I'm just hoping they appreciate prog music when they get older.
