In the specific city where I live (southwestern wastes of the great plains), there are NO GOOD STATIONS. The closest thing we have is one classic rock station (generic and overplayed, mainly), some mixed "hits" stations, and garbage. However, just east of us (in Arkansas, no less), there are two brilliant stations: Magic 105, which plays some excellent classic rock and prog stuff. And then there's The Eagle. While driving through northwestern Arkansas, I took off my headphones from which I was listening to Yes and heard...Yes. "Close to the Edge", no less, and ALL 18 MINUTES OF IT. Plus some Who, Hendrix, ELP, tons of great stuff. Just nothing good here. |

I have usually found that the best music on the radio comes from the college stations and some of the NPR affiliates here in the US. They are usually at the bottom of the dial between 87 and 92 on the FM band. Not always prog, but a lot good stuff. I can't beleive how much mellotron I've been hearing in the last year on college radio. Do you folks in the UK or Europe have college radio stations? Low wattage stations that the students run to learn about the broadcast business? |

I too get Q104.3 and find it fairly decent. They play Roundbout, and All Good People alot. I've also heard some Tull, ELP, and lots and lots of Floyd. However I hate when classic rock stations play crap from the 80s like Def Leppard and Motley Crue. That stuff isn't classic rock.

I can not stand charts that are full of Clapton, The Eagles etc etc all that lot... What is the actual point of compiling those charts, they never change. All that sh!t is just what has been spoonfed to the public and presented to them as 'classic rock' so they lap it up. You could sell sh!t to a sewage farm with the right marketing. Anyway, rock radio in the UK died with Tommy Vance, the only radio I listen to now is BBC radio 4 which is constant current affairs and news, with the odd play thrown in. Sound awful? You wanna check out ANY music station in the UK! Virgin has been known to play a few good tunes, perhaps one in every 50 or so. Rant over... |

Good grief...I really could have written that myself....every word of that, I fully endorse...I wake up every morning to the 'Today' Programme on Radio 4. Ok, so I start the day with floods in New Orleans, 1000 women & children dead outside a Mosque in Iraq and countless arguments over weapons of mass distruction, but when the alternative to Woman's hour is Charlotte Church or the Black Eyed Peas, I know which way I'd jump... |

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

If your getting all the prog you said on the radio then i wouldn't complain if you look at the situation over here in England. We have no stations that even resemble prog and the best one available is 'Kerrang' radio which is still fairly crap and only broadcasts in the Manchester area (last time i looked). Talking about prog in magazines, i saw the new Dream Theatre album and the new Opeth album reveiwed in Kerrang. The first got 4* while the latter got 5*! My respect for Kerrang went up about 5% after that incident...But the question is, how many fans of average rock such as Coldplay (there are a lot in England) would care about prog metal? Rock radio was helped a fair bit by John Peel, who promoted many bands considered prog without caring for the opinions of the majority. I admire the guy for that. |

You guys could get a DAB radio, they're becoming really cheap now. No prog on them though! But there are Rock Stations and BBC 7 is fabulous! |

Yeah, Peel was a big advocate of prog in the early days, but as soon as any of them sold a few records he turned on them, and when punk came along he turned his nose up. He always hated Yes & ELP. I liked his evening show when I was a teenager. I had tapes of some very obscure music, some terrible and some very interesting. |

Nothing here in Austria We only have pop formatted radio stations that have the same music as the pop-stations in other countries (record industries dicatated "pushing-airplay") Except one station, which has gerenrally techno/hiphop/house and electronic on air. There´s a programme windows for rock styles and metal (once a week). But never listened to it specifecly maybe they play some bright stuff.

The man does have a point, and besides, they don't reckon that we are going to be able to get Digital Radio reception round here for another 5 years....the reason? I'm surrounded on all sides by Hergest bloody Ridge!! |
