DP are one of the best Hard Rock bands. I always enjoy listening to them, the constant fight between Lord and Blackmore makes the music quite worthwhile. And the new lineup with Airey and Morse is also a very solid combination.

Hell no...whatever next?

How about 'The Sex Pistols', in a 'Bands That Tried To Kill Prog' sub genre?

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I voted yes

Seriously I think there are good reasons to add the first part of their discography, if you consider that after "Fireball" it's only heavy metal. The guy that added them explained it well.

And I found that in their biography taken from www.allmusic.com :

Deep Purple survived a seemingly endless series of lineup changes and a dramatic mid-career shift from grandiose progressive rock to ear-shattering heavy metal to emerge as a true institution of the British hard rock community

I know a band called Genesis who survived a series of lineup changes and shifts from grandiose progressive rock to ear-hurting pop-"prog" ...

I think Deep Purple deserve a chance to be known as something else than "the heavy metal guys that did smoke on the water" ! I was very surprised when I listened to "Child in time", and their early work is interesting I think (I would be glad to listen to it), for "open-minded" music listeners like we are. I would put them in the same category as Uriah Heep (basing on the mp3 found on this site, I see some resemblance between both groups)...or put both groups out of the archives !

Deep Purple is an amazing band and they (along with The Beatles) introduced  me to the world of music. I have listened to Deep Purple for many years and i think Ritchie Blackmore is one of the most tasteful and innovative guitarists around. Not to mention the great talent of Ian Paice, Ian Gillan, Jon Lord and Roger Glover. From 1968 to  1971 they produced some music that was very prog (especially the 1969 Concerto for Group and Orchestra). But they are still not prog. I was inspired to listen to some Deep Purple after hearing about this.....great hard rock with progressive elements like classical stlye phrases and lots of improvisations but nothing that would earn them a place on this site unless you only put material from thier first 5 or 6 albums which is just wrong. Although I must admit I'm listening to Highway Star right now and I'm hearing some prog type stuff, but it's still not convincing enough. Thats all I gotta say. Peace and keep on proggin!

Deep Purple is one of my favourite bands, but are they prog? No, I don't think so either. They have their proggish elements on some of the early albums (Conserto For Group And..., Fireball...) but still I don't think they are prog.

What a great hard rock band still. Jon Lord rules!

I saw them in consert 2 years ago and they were still excellent! Allthough Jon Lord isn't in the band anymore. Fortunately Don Airey is quite good.

I'm a bit confused with that one KOL. Are you saying that if you don't like a song its not prog?

No, you misunderstood me there. I said they had some Progressive songs and some that are not. Plain and simple and I really like Deep Purple actually

Hello.

The level of the music from early Deep Purple is in any case better and more tasteful than the language on this site like "Crusify the bastard" and "Eat my balls"! And of course was the early Deep Purple progressive, no doubt about that although their sound was far away from King Crimson, Yes or ELP. But these bands were more symphonic inspired and Deep Purple was more blues-rock oriented. To me the discussion about Deep Purple is more a matter of taste, don't forget how innovative and pivotal Deep Purple was for the 'heavy progressive movement'. And now I hope that PA will add The Doors, Santana and Led Zeppelin, they deserve it more than bands like Radiohead, Talk Talk or Captain Beafheart!

Sorry, but Captain Beefheart especially is more progressive than Deep Purple, IMO

Deep Purple are a bloody good heavy rock band, with some powerful peices, Child in Time for example. A great song by a great band, but definitely not prog...........unlike Jon and Vangelis, no great songs and definitely not prog.
