Not much into either man's music, though I'd take Queen over Rainbow if I had to.

Ritchie Blackmore used to smash up his guitars in an entertaining fashion onstage, whereas Brian May made his guitar out of an old fireplace and uses old sixpenny bits as plectrums (plectra?) - on those grounds I choose Blackmore.

Thanks, Ed!

Syzygy:

The best - and most expensive - guitars are made of exceptional wood, like wood from 150 years old houses, doorsteps etc. But among guitarists May is not famous for that, but for tuning the circuits of his guitars in ways that were quite advanced at that time. Blackmore did nothing exceptional, compard to that.

Blackmore's Night sort of is the difference to me. Absolutely love what he has done in that.

So, based on this extensive analysis I have to say Blackmore is best

Her name is Candice Night, and she is friggin hot(OR was rather). Blackmore is definitely a better guitarist.

in MK3 CalJam and the Made in Europe - hes mixing a lot of blues in his

created Rainbow he went back to his old formula). This is my opinion, I
think May has done a lot more for rock guitar, just listen to the heavy
metal licks of Sheer Heart Attack and I Want It All, the pop prowess of A
Kind of Magic and the epics Innuendo and Bohemian Rapsody (this is a 20
year period, my friends). But dont get me wrong, Blackmore is a good
guitarist. Cheers

You neglected to mention his Blackmores night playing where his true genius really shines.

Ritchie Blackmore is one of the best guitarist ever and one of my favourite
He is the author of the greatest riffs in rock music (Smoke On The Water, Stargazer and many others...) and best guitar solos (Child in time, Stargazer - again)

May is a great guitarist, but Blackmore is something else.... Not the nicest guy in the world by any means, but he made his guitar talk like no other. He's my choice without any doubt!

May's tone wins him my vote!  Self-made guitar + amp made with crap from a refuse heap + homemade treble booster pedal = the rocking-est tone ever!  And his guitar-layering antics (like the solo in Killer Queen)

Mmmm... home-made tone...

Two childhood heroes, very hard to make a decision! I've never felt comfortable with Blackmore. "What's in a name" would dr. Freud have said about this extremely complex personality who tend to be so stubborn, agressive and destructive. But this topic is about guitar skills and Ritchie Blackmore has delivered so many outstanding riffs and soli and he is switches so easily from classical to hardrock that I prefer him above Brian May who is in fact Queen's subdued version of Blackmore!

When Tommy Bolin joined Deep Purple, he made Blackmore look bad.  Then he went and killed himself. Too bad too.
Anyway, it's still Richie May err...Brian Blackmore

Ain't this fun?  MAY by a hair.
