Topic: Phil Collins/Genesis Ballads Posted: October 26 2005 at 22:22 |
There are 3 or 4 I havent heard ever, because I lost the interest for the band after ATTW3 (Not because it was goiod, but because I bought the first day of release and still have it almost brand new).
But I hate each and every one of the 15 or 18 songs I heard.
Iván
BTW: The others I have probably heard in any elevator but don't know the names. ![](smileys/smiley2.gif)

[QUOTE=Poxx] Missing the infamous album ruiner: 'For Absent Friends'.[/
QUOTE]
For Absent Friends is Collins singing? I always thought it was Gabriel. It's a
great song anyway. Other than that I hate all Collins ballads and songs you
listed (from the ones I've heard.)

In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises

His balladry was an annoying aspect of 80`s Genesis, diluting the group in quality. After a while, it was hard to distinguish the Phil solo slop from the Genesis ballads, because most of that dreck was similar in it`s banality. And most twitheaded music fans in the 80`s thought solo Phil Collins and Genesis were one and the same.
I didn`t care for his balladry whatsover. Its phony and plastic , especially in light of past events with his second marriage breakup. Disney Phil is an unctious, smarmy piece of filth who would have you believe he`s a martyr. This is a man who based his solo career on the hurt and anguish of his first divorce, yet he caused the same hurt and anguish to his second wife. What a hypocrite!!!
To answer the question proper after that rant, whcich I won`t apologize for;I don`t like Phil ballads and I have no use for him as a singer, post Duke. And if a Genesis reunion were to occur, he`s best off behind the drum stool with his rear end taped to the drum seat and his mouth sealed shut.. |

Maybe if we all hold our collective breaths long enough and stomp our
feet really loud, Phil will stop accepting all of his royalty cheques
for sales for all albums prior to Abacab
...will the circle be unbroken, by and by Lord, by and by?...

Trotsky, I think I know all the songs you mentioned, although about two songs don't sound familiar to me, but then again, I'd like to add That's just the way it is and Can't stop loving you, so that adds up to about 18 ballads as well.
So a) about 18
b) I like most of them more or less; there goes my credibility on the forum ![](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif)
c) My favourite: We Said Hello Goodbye, which is the bonus track on the cd No Jacket Required (it's not on the LP).
Other favourites of mine: Please Don't Ask, Misunderstanding, Take Me Home and Groovy Kind Of Love. I ought to mention also the music to In The Air Tonight, with the great drum sounds.

In my opinion, they are all mostly awful.
'In the air tonight' and 'I missed again' are the only two Phil Collins solo songs I like. Of all the ballads he recorded with Genesis I quite like 'Taking it all too hard' and I can tolerate 'Throwing it all away'
Covers like 'Groovy kind of love' make me feel physically ill....![](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif)

Genesis - Nursery crime
1. The musical box (10/10) 2. For absent friends (10/10) 3. The return of the giant hogweed (10/10) 4. Seven stones (10/10) 5. Harold the barrel (10/10) 6. Harlequin (10/10) 7. The fountain of Salmacis (10/10)
And still I think SEbtP and Tlldob are better just because there is more minutes of music on it...

What do you have against that song? (Oh no not this confused again)I think it's a perfect synthesis of Collins' and Banks' different styles, one of the highlights on Genesis (Shapes). |
I simply find it duller than the rest, and it raises no emotions in me.
Nor I find it funny or weird.
That's all

I agree, In the Air Tonight is an amaaazing song, surprising from Collins. It was meant for Duke, but Banks nixed it. Oh Well. It could of replaced two sh*tty songs there.
