symphony X have too many references to dream theater that cant be coincidental
1. dream theater put their logo in all of their artwork and then symphony x did the same
2. they dress/appear like exactly the same way
3. their album artwork is too similar (V by SX is blatently taken from awake)
4. their riffs sound too similar and their style and vocal range
i
like both bands but dream theater excell over symphony x and are much
more original. i doubt symphony x would be the same if there was no
dream theater

I'd be a hell of a lot more concerned with the similarities of SyX's "V" and Spock's Beard's "V".
|
Yeah, it's a really odd similarity, especially since they both came out in the same year.

I really like Symphony X and their two best albums "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy" and "V: A New Mythology Suite", but take the fact that without Dream Theater there maybe would be no Symphony X. They also got the larger catalogue with outstanding music. So the award goes to:
Dream Theater
Now all DT-haters can throw me with eggs and poop

Dream Theater is far superior. Their music is far less cheesey, and more diverse. I also prefer all of the DT members' styles.

I hope you mean Sx and SB. cos awake came out 6 years before SX V |
Obviously, that's why I quoted MO's post and not yours .
And I don't really see a huge similarity between V and Awake:
They both have mirrors on them, but that's about it. Like MO said,
Spock's Beard's V looks a lot more like Symphony X's V, and also has
the same name and release year:
It's practically the same picture.
EDIT: Oh, and I don't think I answered the original question. I prefer
DT, but love both bands. I'm seeing them both on Saturday, which should
be fantastic.

| u missed the bold cloud skyline, the sand the contrasting colours in the mirror, the way the horizons carry on thru the mirrors and even the positioning of the band names. Can you honestly tell me that a band who were probably heavily influenced by awake, that they coincidently came up with all those similirities without ever having the awake cover in their heads? The artwork designer blatently looked at awake and made as many comparisons as possible. If awake had orange sand and a red sky, everyone would be saying these 2 are the similar ones, not spocks beard that has no mirror or figures staring.

awake cover is better too as it relates to the music more.
- the clock is in the sky is 6:00 - 6:00 - spider web - "caught in a web" - stone figure - "the silent man" - the mirror - "space dye vest"... lol jus kidding, "the mirror" - planets in right corner - "space dye vest" - the mirror is not showing a true reflection - "lie" - the mirror also represents "reflections on reality" which is part of one of the songs
symphony x album cover doesnt really represent the songs. For an album called new mythology suite, they should have had a cover a bit more like twighlight... or odyessey cos they represent mythology better.

Symhpony X is more what I think of when I think Prog metal.Songs about mythology and over the top finger tapping guitar style. This said both bands are the best American prog metal bands.I think DT is getting more into mainstream metal lately and we will see on the new SX album due soon.Does anyone know when the new SX disk is due out?I heard that death metal touches will be added just like the latest Ayreon.

Bah! I hate these SymX / DT comparisons!
I can understand people saying SymX are influenced by DT, a lot of bands are, but not to the extent that most people seem to think. SymX sound as much like DT as they do Blind Guardian, Malmsteen, Helloween, or Stratovarious.
Dream Theater tend to sumble into varied influences, ending up with a more bluesy sound mixed with traditional metal and prog rock. Showy instrumentation and often over-the-top compositions. Symphony X play a heads down (thumbs up! ) style of metal drawing a lot from neo-classical/power metal. They are so much more focused that DT, and while SymX are clearly fantastic musicians as well, aren't as showy as DT. Ok so they both have the capablity to write long epic songs, complex arrangements and different moods, but they are far from the only ones as you all should know.
To answer the topic (though not to compare the two bands ) it depends on what i feel like listening to. I don't make a habit of listening to either too much at the moment, but i just popped V in last night for another listen, as it's one of my favourite albums and i loved it, which is more than i can say for DT lately. Maybe i've just completely worn DT out over the past couple of years though Well anyway when it comes down to it i prefer Symphony X's heads down, focused style of metal than Dream Theater's often stumbling-into-different-areas-and-getting-lost style of playing Not that i'm comparing the two, of course!

I have all the DT albums, including almost their entire catalogue... while i only have Sym X's The Odyssey, Divine Wings, and V (which are all amazing!). So as of now, i lean more toward DT, but Sym X are putting up a good fight. They'e amazing, i definately like Russell Allen's voice over James LaBrie's, but i think i like all the musicians in DT better than Sym X (not to say that Sym X's musicians are good - cuz they're all amazing).
I guess i feel more personally connected to Dream Theater, and i know every song and can sing along with it (or drum along w/ it being a drummer). I cant say the same for Sym X, sometimes i dont even know the song name, i just listened to the sweet as music. I used to think all their songs sounded the same, but now i'm starting to learn them and be able to name them.
In the end, Dream Theater gets my vote, but Symphony X are no doubt amazing!

Both
bands are running different races to me. We could judge against
Symphony X and Shadow Gallery, for example… Anyway, SX and SD are bands
based on a sub-genre that Dream Theater re-energized. IMHO, the
“accolade” goes to DT, even if they score some claptrap in their career.
