Inspired by Frenchie's More Fool Me thread and Guillermo's links to PC's views on Genesis, etc, I thought I'd ask this so-not-prog question ... be honest now ...

1) How many of these pop ballads that Phil Collins cut (either with genesis or as a solo artiste) do you know?
2) How many do you like?
3) What's your favourite? (BTW, I'm not including the truly brilliant In The Air Tonight, which isn't a lovey-dovey tune).

I'll say it again ... be honest  ... here's the list

More Fool Me
Follow You Follow Me
Misunderstanding
Please Don't Ask
Taking It All Too Hard
It's Gonna Get Better
In Too Deep
Throwing It All Away
Never A Time
Hold On To My Heart
Since I Lost You
You Know What I Mean
If Leaving Me Is Easy
This Must Be Love
Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away
Why Can't It Wait Till Morning
One More Night
Take Me Home
Long Long Way To Go
We Said Hello Goodbye
Against All Odds
Separate Lives
Do You Remember
Another Day In Paradise
Groovy Kind Of Love
Two Hearts
Everyday
It's In Your Eyes
You'll Be In My Heart
True Colors

My answers:

1) 18
2) 13 = aarrgh!
3) Follow You Follow Me, excellent synth solo from Tony Banks, I love that tiny modulation during the chorus ... runners-up are More Fool Me and You'll Be In My Heart (damn that movie!)

Edited because I initially left out one of the very best ...

1) 22 (aaarrghh!! probably all except the ones from his latest albums. One of my sister's favourites I'm afraid)
2) hmmm... 7 maybe, but none of them very much. Most of them listenable, though.
3) I used to like Since I Lost You & Hold on My Heart (sis gave We Can't Dance as Xmas present) but More Fool Me can be given 1st place. Or wait a minute... Please Don't Ask!

1) 21
2) 6 (which I really like)
3) "Taking It All Too Hard" or "It's Gonna Get Better" (mainly because of Banks' contributions as co-writer/arranger/musician). From Collins solo it's "If leaving me is easy" or "Why can't it wait till morning"

I have no problem with 'For Absent Friends', but the rest of them?

I think Follow you, follow me is a very good song (9/10), the others that I like on the list are his solo efforts Against All Odds and Another Day In Paradise (8/10).

The worst I have heard is Groovy kind of love.

For Absent Friends is WONDERFUL! I can't see why many people despise it...

Actually he didn't write a single note to this song: it's a cover...(and maybe it's not even been written by those who claim to have done so...there's a long time argument of plagiarism that includes a previous song by late italian singer Ivan Graziani, Agnese, which music is identical to the Toni Wine and Carole Bayer Sager collaboration)

Getting back to the questions:

1) I know them ALL
2) I DON'T LIKE at all Taking It All Too Hard, Throwing It All Away and Hold On My Heart, while In too deep, Never a Time and If leaving me is easy simply make no impression on me. The rest is OK
3) Please don't ask is maybe my favourite

What do you have against that song? (Oh no not this confused again)
I think it's a perfect synthesis of Collins' and Banks' different styles, one of the highlights on Genesis (Shapes).

I agree, In the Air Tonight is an amaaazing song, surprising from Collins.  It was meant for Duke, but Banks nixed it.  Oh Well.  It could of replaced two sh*tty songs there.

I simply find it duller than the rest, and it raises no emotions in me.
Nor I find it funny or weird.

That's all

  Genesis - Nursery crime

1. The musical box (10/10)
2. For absent friends (10/10)
3. The return of the giant hogweed (10/10)
4. Seven stones (10/10)
5. Harold the barrel (10/10)
6. Harlequin (10/10)
7. The fountain of Salmacis (10/10)

And still I think SEbtP and Tlldob are better just because there is more minutes of music on it...

In my opinion, they are all mostly awful.

'In the air tonight' and 'I missed again' are the only two Phil Collins solo songs I like. Of all the ballads he recorded with Genesis I quite like 'Taking it all too hard' and I can tolerate 'Throwing it all away'

Covers like 'Groovy kind of love' make me feel physically ill....

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
