Both SEBTP and Foxtrot (and Nursery Cryme for that matter) are 5* albums by a mile IMO.
Look at the ratings! You may not like them (and you are fully entitled to your view, however wrong it may be) but you are very much in the minority.

I am on Zooka and Trouserpress' side here. Both of those albums to me are completely inconsistent and average. I know that Genesis is an influential and big name in prog, but it doesn't mean their music is brilliant. The only really good song they have to me is Firth of Fifth, that song is so cool compared to any other songs on both albums that it was probably an accident. Try to convince me that anything on these albums are amazing. |
A lot of music has to do with opinion, and remember just becuase you dont like them doesnt make them any less appealing to other people. Personally other than hot rats, i think everything Frank Zappa has done is rubbish. But I dont go on every Frank Zappa thread saying. "Its not any good, prove to me that its good even though you cant becuase its opinion and ill just act like its terrible and there isnt ANYTHING you can do about it!"

I've still never met a prog album that i've liked immediately. it
takes a few listens to get into any [good] band [worth listening
to]. give it a while. let the subtleties sink in.

Wow... then you've been to some nice forums. My other main haunt is
probably most notable for the frequency with which members will call
one another c**ts.

- Gabriel's cringeworthy, sorry "theatrical" vocals.
- Often uninspiring musicianship.
- Sickly tweeness.
- The inescapable feeling that the music has not aged AT ALL well.
And yes, I do like prog as well. If anyone's thinking of suggesting otherwise because I too can't see the appeal of Genesis, then quite simply: f**k you. |
For a friend of mine- hun..you dissappoint me.

Foxtrot took a bit for it to sink in for me, but it is a great album.

Sorry lass, but a few times before now I've been accused not being "a
true prog fan" because I dislike Genesis. That sort of thing's really
rather frustrating and I've not time for it.

Some people just don't like Gabriel's voice, the same with Labrie's and Fish's voice, its all about taste.

I'm sure he's aware that it's his opinion, and I don't think he ever
wanted it to "change the water level," so to speak. We all state our
opinions on here all the time; that's the whole point of having a forum
like this. Why does everyone seem so offended by Zooka doing the same?
Just because his opinion is unpopular doesn't mean he meant to be
hostile by posting it, nor does it mean that it's any less valid than
any other opinion that's shared around here.

the best rock drumming ever, IMO... amazing poetic lyrics... wonderful
piano, best writing from Genesis on these 2 records... amazing
counterpoint, rhythm, melodies,
and chance taking. Amazing album artwork... Next to Close
to the Edge, these are my favorite Symphonic Prog records.

Genesis >> all neo-prog copycats, IMO.
Maybe I'm not a real avant-progger since i've enjoyed those albums approximately a month ago.
And I am always reminded of avant when I'm listening to taht song Frith of Fifth. lol

@ Trouserpress: For Avant-Proggers like you and me, Genesis will always sound uninspiring. Let's face it.
@ Everyone else (specially Genesis fans): Sorry, but IT DOES sound uninspiring and dull
|
Oh my god !!! Look at this guys It seem that "Avant-Proggers" and God are synonyms. It's because of people like him that many thinks proggers are snobish. Sorry Mnemosyne, but your message is completely stupid and snob.
Genesis are my favorite bands, and I love all their cd of the Gabriel era plus some of the Collins/Hackett era. I'm a musician, I listen to a lot of music, and sorry, but I found Genesis inspiring, intelligent, and very good musicianship.
I don't care you don't like them, just don't think you are right for everyone telling that they are uninspiring. This is just a question of TASTE, not a hierachy where Avanat-Proggers are on the top !
Stupid........
