Check them out man, although many of them you will not be certainly your cup of tea. I love Avant-Prog, and Avant-Everything. Many of the albums on my list you're not familiar with are like Avant-Metal or Avant-Prog Metal... But you know, as everything Avant-garde, it is really challenging and extremely recommended.

Please start with Italian Jazz-Avant-Metal band, Ephel Duath.

I don't mind metal when it's really innovative and lays off the cookie monster vox. Italian Jazz-Avant-Metal sounds like it HAS to be worth a shot!

Nope, but some do and they're an immediate turnoff for me.

Oh damn, someone mentioned Solefald   I think their 2nd album Neonism is their best work.  It's defintely a captivating album, and not  your typical metal album, if it is metal?  It does have some black metal influences but if you want to hear something different, listen to it!
