Topic: Porcupine Tree Virgin Posted: August 25 2005 at 10:28 |
What would you recommend as first album for a Porcupine Tree "virgin"?
I've tried the free MP3's from this site and I'd like to hear some
more.

I love Porcupine Tree and have for some time, but it just occurred to me
for the first time that it is one silly band name.

Well, if you like Progressive Metal, pick up In Abstenia.
But, if you like lighter Progressive Music, try Lightbulb Sun.

Well, Steven Wilson started it as a joke. Originally, it was a fictional band with its own made up history and everything. Who would have thought that it could have turned into something so great.

It really depends what you're into. If you want Floydian sounding
stuff, pick up "Up the Downstair." If you want 60's type
psychedelia, pick up "On the Sunday of Life." If you want
acid-rock/club music, pick up "Voyage 34." If you want 70's style
symphonic prog, pick up "The Sky Moves Sideways." If you want
accessible rock music, pick up "Stupid Dream" or "Lightbulb Sun"
(though these albums are going to be hard to find until they are
rereleased sometime next year). If you want prog-metal, pick up
"In Absentia." I actually might recommend the new one,
"Deadwing," as a good starting place, because even though it's not
their best in my opinion, it has a lot of different styles that they
have done on it. (The album has, over the course of its nine
songs, a prog metal song, a Led Zep-influenced hard rock song, a piano
ballad, a Nine Inch Nails-sounding song, a long proggy track, a
mellower song, another hard rock song, one song that I find it hard to
compare to anything else, and lastly, a mellow, languid Floydian song.)

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Since it's a band conastantly evolving i'd say that you could pick any
album to start with. What i find nice though, is -even in their latest
two albums which are a lot more metal-ish- that you can still tell that
what you're listening to is [apart from "psychedelic music, performed
under the influence of a mind-altering chemical called..."] Porcupine
Tree from the first turns of the record.
My favourite one would be Up The Downstair. For the simple reason that
this album was my introduction to the band and i also have connected a
lot of the music and lyrics with things that happened in my life back
then.
On the other hand, i haven't heard anything "bad" out of them, so...

Yeah, I'd also say that it's ok (not staggeringly good but not weak as well)- more commercial-minded and simpler than previous records. Take Poland- in contrast to PT's other CD-s, people buy it like proverbial 'hot rolls'. Some say that it's lacking in well-thought-out and reflective pieces. I's partially true..

Don't ever have sex with a porcupine or a tree. It could hurt.
Seriously though, I'm listening to Deadwing right now. And I must say . Great album. I'm also really fond of Up the Downstairs and The Sky Moves Sideways (both of these are a bit more spacey and have more of a Floyd feel to them). Deadwing keeps the spaceyness but adds a heftier punch to the music. I'm slowly getting more into PT myself. I'm thinking of picking up Signify next.
