CAN Monster Movie progressive rock album and reviews CAN - Monster Movie (1969)
Review (Permanent link) by Brian Travers @ 12:18:36 AM EST, 8/20/2005
1 stars  —   Ugh, disgusting. If this is prog count me out. Thank god its not the prog i like!

This album is pathetic, ARGHHH it makes me so angry that bands are popular for crap. This album will SCARE you it is so bad. Go listen to something good that came out of the 60's or 70's, not CAN!

I think that this review needs to be deleted.  Brian says that this album is "disgusting" without even saying why?????  Not a good review at all!!!!

Just spotted this review which has sat here for more than a year ... I don't think there's one word about the album ... BTW, guys, Keith Reid's name is mis-spelt on the credits of this album ...

PROG REVIEWER

1 stars  —  Most of the times when it comes to review an album, I set my eyes first on some other prog reviewers' work to get an idea of what I actually wanna talk about and then I come with my own stuff, you know, to criticize within a critic; but this time that ain't that kind of situation. More than a review, this is a call for all of those reviewers, prog experts and webmasters of Prog Archives to be more careful about what you upload to the site in order to give a pure, clear info to all prog starters and for all of those prog devoted fans as well. I know I'm gonna be bombed away and gonna get criticized as well for this, but I'm aware of that and I'll take it as the prog fan I am now! For what I know and heard during all these years within the prog world, PROCOL HARUM ain't no progressive music; this is neither art nor prog rock, this is a reactive kind of music that came up the music scene as a response to the other genres.

Let's put things sparkling clear so we don't get mixed up or confused at the time we give each group a space or a category. I'm not saying I hate their music, not that I love it in the other hand; but, it's imperative to be realistic in order to be able to compare and judge, because this is a matter that should be pointed out. The fact of this band appearing during the early 70's (late 60's) doesn't determine that they must be progressive rock musicians or anything related to it, they have a style of their own that goes hand in hand with other contemporary bands; but this is certainly not prog rock, that's it.

Think of KYRIE ELEISON for instance, an Austrian band formed first in 1974 by three school friends Gerald KRAMPL - Keyboards, Felix RAUSCH - Guitars and Karl NOVOTNY - Drums, together with Wolfgarng WESSELY - Vocals and Gerhard FRANK - Bass that by the year 1976 went into an in fact very cheap studio, and began to record nearly under live conditions with only 2-track recording machines. The release of the album in January 1977 was quite a sensation, as if was one of the first independent releases in Austria and therefore highly acclaimed by the press and music magazines. They played in all major cities in Austria, as well as on same big open on festivals together with bands like VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, COLLOSSEUM, AMON DÜÜL, EELA CRAIG, OPUS, etc. They played and produced great music, they are indeed huge prog rockers, they are one of the European top most memorable prog rock bands and still, they just didn't make it to qualify for a spot in this site due the standards of the reviewers yet the experts. Instead we can log on to PROCOL HARUM and THE MARS VOLTA's page and think of them as Progressive music…

Suachili's three reviews of DEP, all somewhat vague, and all offering 5-star ratings.

Thanks Trotsky. Are you there Alberto, your reviews are usually great?Confused

MO, weak but OK I reckon. (As a rule, I'm not going to pull anyone up on their star ratings, it's too much of a minefield, especially when ratings without reviews are accepted. Makes for good discussion in the forum though!Wink)

You're welcome, Easy ... yup we haven't heard too much from Alberto/landberkdoten in a while I think ... It might be easier to act on this review ... it's the third time I've reported it  ... am I missing something?

ZAUBER Aliens
Review (Permanent link) by Kathleen Zien @ 2:42:30 PM EST, 10/28/2004

5 stars  —  This album was totally unrealistic, yet remarkably solid. As a person who has been through an Alien Abduction, I can attest that the Aliens in the songs were right on par. I relived the experience stereophonically. Real aliens make you drink mind bacteria that takes over your brain. This album will take over your brain. I think the singer was appropriate, but the composition of the album was what was amazing.

We cannot be seen to discriminate against people who have been through alien abductions.

Only joking, thanks again Trots!

OPETH - Damnation (2003)
Review (Permanent link) by Robert Alcock @ 4:39:13 AM EST, 8/23/2005
1 stars  —   This album was a total disappointment for me. Opeth decided to put out 2 albums, with one heavy album and one lighter album. Deliverance was the heavy album and was in a similar style to Blackwater Park and almost as good. Upon hearing it, I thought "how could they put out a lighter album than this?" because it contains quite a few light moments. When I heard Damnation, I was shocked. It is an incredibly light album - so light that it doesn't fit into the prog metal category at all. It is painfully light! I gave my copy to a second hand shop because I couldn't bear to keep it.

If you are a prog lover who doesn't normally like prog metal then you might in fact like this album. I like many kinds of prog but I can't stand this album. If you're expecting prog metal from this album then you will be very disappointed.

Yeah - the guy is disappointed, yeah - it's very light, yeah - it's not prog metal. I think this review is terrible because it doesn't say a word about the music.

I'm in two minds about that one Logos. Yes, it's not particularly detailed or informative, but there is a clear message there. I'd be interested in other opinions on it.

I red it too before you commented on it, but though it's not a perfect review, I'm not against it's remaining here.

hardly something anyone could find interesting to read, but not offencive, and clearly stating he finds it too light, whatever that means.

keep it, contact the witer if you can to make him return a better one, but the review in it self doesn't warrant deletion.

don't be surprised if I put it back on when you delete it

I think the review unintentionally works, because it makes me interested in the album. I prefer my prog metal on the light side.

An interesting point, Dargon Phoenix. Actually, I can remember some instances when bad reviews made me curious about an album. When the reviewer feels the need to bash an album for reasons which you find ridiculous, it might indicate a really interesting album.

These two reviews of Hammill's "In Camera", submitted very close to each other, by a "Greg" and a "Gregory".  Considering the flood of Hammill reviews by the same guy...  perhaps something worth looking into.

I deleted the copy of the review. It was indeed offensive, no point in giving it oxygen here! EL

MAGMA Köhntarkösz progressive rock album and reviews MAGMA - Köhntarkösz (1974)
Review (Permanent link) by Lethe Italian Progressive Rock Band from Milan @ 5:25:12 AM EST, 8/27/2005
SPECIAL COLLABORATION
4 stars  —   Dated 1974, this fascinating as well sinister live from a dissonant band such as Magma was an important event, above all for the so called “Zeuhl” Music (think of the controversial French avant-garde albums, except on “Eros” by Dun, perhaps the best and too much intricate work of all time within this music genre…so accept or refuse them as for their difficult features, in their coherent nature!!).Nevertheless their lack of precise melodies, except on several interesting but disagreeable vocalizations, even by paying their tribute to Coltrane, make their job a complex and often unbearable number, which can disturb the common listener…well I don’t get crazy for their gloomy tunes of free music, in this sort of “ritual” mysticism , but of course -sometimes- I recognize the cleverness of their efforts inside, especially those ones by Didier Lockwood (an underrated English guitarist).

At the end erase "one star" at least, especially if you're not patient!

Someone has got his wires crossed here; neither does Didier Lockwood play guitar (he plays violin) nor does he appear on the album (he appears on the live album though)

This guy reviewed the wrong thing:

This is obviously a review for the DVD, not the CD. Could you please move it? Thanks!
