YES - Big Generator (1987)
Review by BELVA @ 2:10:31 PM EST, 5/21/2005

—   5 stars? Yeah and I'm am the Pope (actually I wanted to be once). This is what I call "Prostitution", not the one I frequent ( much, much better stuff than this album), but SELLING YOUR BUTT FOR GETTING MONEY. This album is even worse than the previous one. No catchy "owner of a lonely fart " too. No kiddin, use your money for real prostitution. It's more producing. BELVA'S BACK. Everybody hated immorality? Are you moral? Do you really think so?

DREAM THEATER - Octavarium (2005)
Review by unknown @ 4:47:03 PM EST, 5/22/2005
4 stars  —   1. The leaks are fake. 2. The leaks are not fake. To my knowledge, there are only two real leaked tracks, Panic Attack and These Walls. Both are edits, probably for radio play. Other tracks available over p2p are (to my knowledge) relabeled tracks from James LaBrie's latest solo album, Elements of Persuasion.

TALK TALK Spirit of Eden progressive rock album and reviews TALK TALK - Spirit of Eden (1988)
Review by Michael @ 4:32:12 AM EST, 5/24/2005
5 stars  —   ummm, ok, just gotta say first... I love the "warning prompt" that comes up before I rate this album FIVE STARS... it kindly warns me that "not every album, yada yada yada" will WARRANT THE FIVE STARS I JUST CASUALLY TYPED AS IF I WAS TYPING MY SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. yeah, five stars. where's 6. this is truly the greatest album ever. hands down. close as Sabbath's Paranoid. it's a race between this and paranoid by sabbath.

MORSE, NEAL - Testimony Live (DVD) (2004)
Review by Orlando Hernandez @ 2:56:23 PM EST, 5/24/2005

—   Hi there... actually, there´s an important thing that´s going on here: God´s work never stops!!! I´m a christian musician from venezuela, a dedicated one to His work. Share the video of Testimony with my colleagues and get involved with the music around, the leit motif, the vivid description through the music... even some of them don´t believe in Jesus, but said the music itself leads you to understand something: God is the creator, and He gave the man the opportunity of re-create the world by the talents and gifts HE puts in you... There are many things that are important in life... but, you know... there´s a decision you make one time, one important answer thats last for ALL THE ETERNITY: What did you do with Jesus?... He came and give us life, the eternal life... He said that HE is the "only" way, the "peacefull" thruth and the "eternal" life... Just answer this question: where are you going to be when all this pass through? Let me share my personal answer to this: I´ll be in God´s place of eternal rest... playing and singing with Neal and my brothers and sisters all around the world, the ages and languajes... And i´ll be glad to see you there and share the greatest testimony of Love: Jesus took us there, through the cross, cleansed by his Blood and made son of God... If something of the video or this writing make you take a decision, we can share this pray: Father in Heaven, thanks for your love. I recognice that i´ve been worry about things that doesn´t last, but you send your son Jesus to show me the Way, the Thruth and the Real Life!. I accept the gift of eternal life in you, the salvation. Jesus, come to my hearth and live there, Holy Spirit, led my life. In Jesus name i pray! Amen. If you made this pray with faith, welcome to the real life... If you want to share something of this, feel free to email me to: [email protected] Orlando Hernandez Sanchez God´s servant, musician Last Frontier Mission - Caracas, Venezuela.

DREAM THEATER Octavarium

DREAM THEATER Octavarium
Review by Floyd @ 8:30:05 PM EST, 5/25/2005

3 stars  —  So what do you get when you cross Linkin Park with Train of thought??? Right, Octavarium. With a more comercial and more industrial sound (yes, they even got dj scrathes this time around), we are treated to simpler, friendlier songs, with synth melodies that sometimes sound a little "futuristic".

Im really disappointed, long are gone the days of the elegant Images&Words and theres not even a resemblance to Metropolis II in here, also dont expect to hear Rudess's magical solos. Although Petrucci is amazing as always, but concerning him, theres nothing new here. I think Portnoy has gone out of shape, so dont expect super complex&powerfull drumming either.

Im not saying this is a bad record, Im sure you will enjoy the (sometimes not so progressive) songs, its only that since 6 Degrees came out im always saying to myself "right, the next one will be the one great DT album we all are wating for", and that aint happened yet, and judging by the direction the band is taking, I dont know if it may happen at all.

In conclusion, I guess old fans of DREAM THEATER will be disappointed like I am, but maybe new fans will like the record, and then someday discover the amazing music this band used to make.

DREAM THEATER - Octavarium (2005)
Review by Harrish A. Rebutoc @ 1:09:07 PM EST, 5/26/2005
2 stars —   Just Got the new album and I'm really disappointed. Dream Theater's music has evolved into some kind of Progressive Industrial Techno crap and I hate it. They're doing too much experimenting, and they're losing touch in their music. Been listening to them since 94' and I had no complaints until now. In fact I have all their albums and DVDs. Where are those epic songs that they use to make? only five minuite songs here. I'm sure lots of progfans will be disappointed if they bought this album. Dream Theater should really get back to the drawing board. Hard for me to say this coz they're my idols...But their album sucks this time. I'm just afraid this would be the beginning of the end for Dream Theater...

2 stars  —  Radiohead should not be in ProgArchives, this is not prog rock, but something between alternative rock and 'dark pop'. Nevertheless, there are some good songs on this album like "Let Down", "Karma Police", "No surprises" and "Lucky" but the other tracks are quite boring, and i can't stand Thom Yorke's awful voice. IMHO one of the most overrated album of all time ! For fans only.

I really don't understand why my (not so cruel) review has been deleted and these ones are still here (maybe because of the 5 stars ?!). Rules seems not to be the same for everyone...

5 stars  —  Ok theres is nothing progressive about this band, maybe this album because of songs like airbag and paranoid android, but still, I don´t understand what this band is doing is this site... having said that I think this album is the best of the 90´ and one of worlds best albums ever recorded. If I would have to go to an desert island and would have to take 5 albums I would take 1. IV from Led Zeppelin, 2. In the Court of the Crimson King from King Crimson, 3. The White Album from the Beatles, 4. The Yes Album from Yes ...and 5. Ok Computer from Radiohead...just mindblowing, excellent from beginig to end. 5 stars!!!

RADIOHEAD Ok Computer
Review by Tony Fisher @ 12:25:27 PM EST, 4/18/2005

1 stars  —  OK, this isn't prog in any shape or form but so what; it's just been voted greatest album of all time by Channel 4 viewers in the UK so let's review it anyway. All I can say is that the people who voted for this have never heard real bands who can play their instruments and write songs; all but about 10 of my 800+ albums wipe the floor with this bilge. The songs are tedious, the singer manages to incorporate that dreadful whining moan which I thought Liam Gallagher had a monopoly on and the guitarist is still on grade 3. And people compare this to Pink Floyd? Well, the Barratt years maybe but The Floyd soon learned to play and write, unlike this bunch. Good moments? The end! I bought it on impulse for experimentation and it's due for the charity bag. Most overrated album of all time? Beating Definitely Maybe? Yep!

RADIOHEAD Ok Computer
Review by Parrot @ 9:00:30 AM EST, 5/27/2005

5 stars  —  a brilliant group of songs!!
not their most original album, nor their most experimental, nor their best, and probly not their most accesible or inaccesible album, it is however their most fun rock album and probly there most characterful album!!
its not prog rock (w/e that is) its just a great group of songs that bring a nice listening experience with a consistant theme and perfect 90's alt' rock sound!!
it also has the longest and most epic radiohead album-track (paranoid android) and the perfect interlude (fitter happier)
5 stars - 9 out of 10!!

We've got two real reviews for Octavarium and 3 fake ones. And the fake ones are as follows.

DREAM THEATER Octavarium
Review by Vlad GALU @ 6:51:07 PM EST, 5/27/2005

1 stars  —  Seems to me that they've changed their target audience from 30-40 to 15 year old people. Why ?

There only are short, shallow songs, easy to digest, the "headbang and buy" kind. The feeling is gone, there's absolutely no new idea throughout the whole album. LaBrie uses a lot of voice make-up. Maybe his voice is gone ? I hope not, though...

Yes, Myung is not distinguishable, as is Petrucci.

I've been banned from the Petrucci forum for expressing my views and I was accused of being biased to my own opinion rather than keeping a balance between it and theirs. Which seems awfully silly, since I'm the consumer, the buyer, the guy that pays them.

If they don't do something quick after this album, which I consider to be a total fiasco, they will surely lose all their fan base, replacing it with new age kiddies who don't care if they go to a DT or Linkin Park concert. Of course, the revenues will be considerably higher.

DREAM THEATER Octavarium
Review by Mark @ 10:08:27 PM EST, 5/27/2005

2 stars  —  This album is the most dissapointing album that Dream Theater have brought out. Im a huge DT fan and have been awaiting the next studio release from them for awhile now, and to be presented with this short 44 minute album is very depressing. All of the songs except for the first track which is 6 minutes long, are 5 minutes long!! I know for a normal band 5 minutes is quite an effort, but this is Dream Theater we are talking about, not a normal band.

Petrucci shines in moments during the album as he always does but fails to help develop each song. The approach of the instrumental in this album is less Dream Theater and more heavy and fast. This creates a clouded sound to their songs, and thus the melodies have no chance to progress.

The vocals are less powerful in this album as LaBrie seems to have completely changed his vocal style. Too much influence from the growing market trends of music today.

Also, what is with the DJ, turn table / techno bit in Track 2! I listened to that and thought....did i get the wrong cd? This can't be right...! Track 4, I Walk Beside You I believe is the most "DT" song of the album, as it contains a melody which has progressive potential and kinda progresses a little.

All of the songs seem to based on the simple, intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, guitar solo, chorus END, appraoch. The unique thing about Dream Theater is that their other music got past this boring and repetitive approach. They would delicately decide how to play a song so that it would always progress, through the lyrics AND the instrumental. The guitar solos were numerous in many songs. This album comlpetely ignores this appraoch to their music.

I also wonder what Rudess is doing during this album. The keyboard input in this album seems to have the smallest input of all their albums. And what is with the techno intro to the Octavarium song? Its sounds as though another James Bond movie is coming out. What is more sad is that that song is probably the best or second best of the album. Even though it spends half of the time repeating the same guitar chords over and over. And the other half is spend playing heavy fast "clouded" music...

I gave it 2 stars, fans only, but really i don't think any fan should buy this album as it will completely break their heart to hear this short and ugly album.

How long till the next album? Maybe then they can redeem themselves, but always they will be the greatest band to me :)

PINK FLOYD - Division Bell (1994)
Review by lloyd @ 12:20:14 PM EST, 5/29/2005
1 stars —   ha ha there was a momentery lapse of reason first and then this disastour, without rodger where are they,i think they accepted the fact that the driving force has left the band, they are out of ideas, this was their last one,a great day for freedom is a prime example of this, trying to imitate rodgers ideas, and in what do you want from me,dave is admitting retirement, while rodgers brain is still creating, the divisionbell is a sellout with no risk taking, the floyd are old and probably in pyjamas and slippers, while rodger like bowie is timeless, the division bell?more like sell out hell!

^ OK, FW, it's not a very good review, but it's not offensive, either. We can't just delete all the poorly written/unimformative reviews -- that would be a HUGE task, and would anger many, many people.

You don't need to be a good writer to post a review, and there is also the issue of those writers whose first language is not English. Their reviews are often somewhat awkwardly written, naturally, but the substance of their opinions still comes through. (Reviews are opinion pieces.)

This reviewer (above) doesn't like the CD, and considers Floyd sans Waters to be bereft of good musical ideas. We may not agree with him, but the writer is entitled to hold -- and present -- that opinion here. Stern Smile

I agree, that last Division Bell review was pretty brutal, but it should stand as is and not be erased. It's obvious this writer is just trying to 'skew' the numbers/ratings, but it takes all kinds to make the world go 'round... Better to be hated than ignored!

The funny thing is, a brutal review such as this one, spouting bile and with spelling mistakes shows just how juvenile the writer is. And more often than not, a review like this would be dismissed out of hand by any sensible reader. Certainly reviews of the album by people like Useful Idiot, Floyd Wright, chris stacey or Guillermo hold more water and will be appreciated by those people learning more about this touchstone FLOYD album.
Marmalade...I like marmalade.
