You could say the Guitarist from Jethro Tull is perfect... doesn't mean everyone agrees with you.
In my eyes, DREAM THEATER ARE THE GREATEST BAND EVER! THEY ARE FLAWLESS!
Some will disagree, but that is what I believe. It is my opinion.
|
But do you go into an album knowing it will be 5 stars before you even listen just because it is Dream Theater? That is what it sounds like. If they are flawless they will never make a bad record so why bother even critiquing you already know the review.

Because it's all opinion... I think they're perfect, because I love every song of theres. Doesn't mean they are perfect. They just are to me.
Anyway, I'm not fighting with you... I'm enjoying this. This is a good discussion.

Ok good.....no hard feelings..........so you just admitted they aren't perfect, you just think they are cause you love them...basically.
I didn't think this thread would get so long.

So if a Dream Theater fan doesn't say "Dream Theater is my favourite band but I'll admit they're not perfect" then they're ignorant?
|
YES! Unless the band has Beethoven on keyboards they aren't perfect! Every band has imperfections!
|
Imperfection is a subject of opinion.
I think Dream Theater are perfect in every way. That's my opinion. Does that make me ignorant?

No I do not think you are ignorant. Do not think that. I do not want to fight with you. I just think you're being silly. Humans are not perfect. Therefore how could dream theater be perfect? I've never come across any band that was perfect so maybe I'm to strict in my rating.

I've not tried downloading any of it, but from what I've heard, what you have downloaded IS James LaBries solo album.
|
I think Valarius is correct, i believe those are relabled LaBrie solo tracks. I hope you learned your lesson of piracy!

The problem about DT fans is that they only know DT. If someone knows ELP, Yes, and all and he still perfer DT and give a 5 stars rating, that's nice. No problem. But I really doubt thoses like the one quoted in the first post know al least 5 other prog bands. |
So what? If someone only knows Dream Theater and decides to rate their albums five stars, that's their choice.
It's not like... "yeah, you may be a DT fan, but you don't know anything about music until you know Yes, ELP, Genesis and Marillion are better..."

I love opinions, that is what makes the world go round!
but that AWFUL DT banner, where Jordan looks hopelessly gay, Mike is taking a crap, James is just looking weird, John has one row of huge teeth and Mr. Myung is likely playing with himself. humm..not sure about that. Like the album covers though, always good. The new one looks pretty decent too.

BLASPHEMY!
Anyhow, I totally understand what you mean... It's really awkward because I totally agree with you, but I also disagree with you.
As I've said, I'd proudly give every Dream Theater album five stars. And yes I do know every song and yes I love every song. If I wanted to write a review and got lazy, I would give a quick five stars and a few lines about why it's good.
Now, I understand what you mean about feeling cheated and stuff, but I feel if someone likes an album and gives it five stars with a very brief comment, that should be good enough. As this is the persons review of the album and it doesn't have to be a huge lecture. At the end of the day you could have ten DT fans give "Awake" five stars with a brief comment with no consideratin... you could hear the album and think it's crap... but who's to blame?
Not you. Not the reviewers.
It's all about personal taste.
(Although I guess you're the one who loses out with the money. )
Peace.

Fraid so. I know each and every song, and for a reason I can't explain (and shouldn't have to anyway) I love them all. |
Absolutely. I just don't get this constant sl*gging off of others' personal tastes around here. It would be different if it was done in a constructive and mature manner, but this is rarely the case.

Great Post. But the ones that annoy me that I'm talking about don't come into the prog world trying to explore, they come in thinking that they know it all, and that DT is the final authority on all Prog, and that the 70's scene was crap compared to the supreme greatness of DT. (ok my run-on sentence is complete) THAT pisses me off. |
But why do they think they know it all. If someone thinks Dream Theater are the greatest prog band ever, and says the 70's era was crap, then he/she is entitled to that opinion. It doesn't make them ignorant in my opinion, because that's basically saying "you're not into the music I'm into, so you're ignorant".
