Topic: prog labels!! Posted: June 02 2004 at 14:42 |
According to you which labels had a huge influence in the promotion of the so called prog rock scene?
For me it's maybe Virgin (at their beginning) and Brain...

From the very beginning I'd say CBS and Columbia, maybe RCA...
but nowadays, the prog scene will be severely damaged if there weren't prog labels such as:
MUSEA RECORDS
EMI RECORDS
EASTWEST RECORDS

Philippe,
How about Harvest (BJH, Floyd, etc.), Manticore (bit obvious I suppose), Island (remember "Bumpers"?). Credit also to the major labels (Atlantic, Deram/Decca etc.) who used to be far more adventurous than they are now.
In more recent times, Inside Out & Verglas.

Not to mention the current 'Classic Rock' label (an offshoot of the superb magazine of the same name - an essential monthly purchase for any proghole

One way records : they reissued lots of prog records, in various subgenres : fusion with David Sancious, metal-prog with Dream Theater (When dream and day unite), Canterbury (Soft Machine) and many others.
Wounded bird records : another label that reissued many fusion or prog artists, including Steve Walsh, Lenny White, Jan Hammer, Steve Morse Band.
Inside Out : the current leading metal-prog label in Europe.

Island released some great prog =King Crimson=
Virgin were an odd case - not afraid to experiment - and incidentally not only released great proggy stuff like Gong, but also the Sex Pistols - prog's nemesis!
But Harvest had much more than its fair share of prog - so I think they were the most important label.

In the early days of prog and related rock in the UK, we looked to the following labels:
Island Records - Renaissance, Krimson, Quintessence, (Traffic), Fairport Convention
Decca/Deram: Genesis, Moody Blues, Camel, 'Igginbottom Wrench, Caravan
CBS: United States Of America, (brass rock of BST and Chicago), Black Widow, Soft Machine
Verve: Velvet Underground, Ultimate Spinach, the early Mothers????, Caravan (home of 60's avante rock)
Vertigo: Keith Tippett, Magna Carta
EMI/Harvest: Floyd, Kevin Ayers, Edgar Broughton Band, Quatermass, BJH, even Deep Purple (what is Concert for Rock Group and Orchestra if not prog rock?)
(Harvest spin out of EMI and Parlophone signe dgroups)
RCA: Jefferson Airplane
RCA/Neon: Tonton Macoute, Centipede
Charisma: Nice, Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator, String Driven Thing, Atomic Rooster
Polydor: Blind Faith, Jack Bruce, Pink Fairies
Atlantic: Yes, LZ, Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge
Liberty: ?????????????
(The US label ABC Records, must have sold a lot of Soft Machine and Soft Machine Volume 2 as imports into the UK)

Don't forget "Magna Carta"
I think InsideOut is the leading prog-label this times...and they feature exclusively prog (OK I don't count Rhapsody as prog so they're one exception...) and promote it very well...

... and don't forget CUNEIFORM, with its penchant for jazzy and/or avant-garde dissonant and/or RIO and/or psychodelic bands. One of their most featured merits was the reburbishment of KANSAS Mk. II, now PROTO-KAW.
Regards.

Great list Dick, says it all.
The only bands I can remember on Liberty were Creedence Clearwater Revivial and Canned Heat, both good (but quite different) rock bands. I think I've also got a single by the Fifth Dimension on the same label, "Wedding Bell Blues" maybe, but now I really am digressing!

Yes I know
But InsideOut features the Flower Kings, Spocks Beard, Transatlantic, IQ, Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, Pallas and many more Prog that doesn't fit into the Prog Metal genre

Weren't Man on Liberty???????? Yep Canned Heat for sure (but their first two album were the first I saw in the 'progressive music' section in record shops in the UK - i.e. electric blues was then progressive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). And there was a lot of other blues - Groundhogs (then, their Split was categorised as "progressive music" - octave splitters, fuzz boxes etc etc. - and I'm pleased to say I got to speak with Tony McPhee 10 days ago and I was amazed to discover he's shorter than me - I thought all rock stars were tall), Alexis Korner (+ lots blues back catalogue) and I've just remembered Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[I too confess to having a Fifth Dimension album - their record of Jim Webb and "Hair" covers (Title?), which always got played at parties in the 60's - but CCR's version of "Grapevine" and Rare Earth's (what happened to them?) "Get Ready" came out too......................]
And I couldn't remember the short lived label which spun off from Deram and in fact Igginbottoms Wrench was signed to that - was it Nova??????.

It's interesting how the generally accepted definition of prog has changed over the years, as you say Dick, The Groundhogs and Canned Heat were considered progressive at that time. I wasn't a great fan of the Groundhogs, but "Split" was a classic, "Cherry Red" and all that!
Interesting that you were talking to TMcP, I often wonder how many "stars" of the 70's I've passed in the street, and not recognised. When you see Dave Gilmour these days, he looks like a retired bank manager, not the long haired, bearded rock musician of "Meddle".
CCR were a great band, I still play "Ramble tamble" from the same album "Cosmo's factory" on regular occasions (weddings, parties, anything!).
