Hey Prog Fans, I am a huge progressive rock fan. I also love to read horror novels. I came across this novel titled THE DEMONOLOGIST, by a well-known horror author named Michael Laimo. This writer is apparently a huge prog fan, as he lists SPOCK’S BEARD, NEAL MORSE, TRANSATLANTIC, DREAM THEATER, MARILLION and other bands in his acknowledgements at the beginning of the book. Upon reading the book, I saw that some of the characters are named after prog musicians, ie Morse, Stolt, Hogarth, etc. Just thought I’d mention this here in case anyone is looking for a good read. The author has a website at http://www.laimo.com. |

Hi, I'm back. I am a big fan of Spock's, Flower Kings, Neal, IQ, etc. I post primarily on horror boards pushing my fave bands, but I thought I'd turn this one around. Just spreading the good word. No spam here. |

^ I do. And that's an understatement. My favorite horror author has at least one prog band named after one of his creations: Shub-Niggurath. As far as bands go, they're not one of my favorites, but still... |

Ah, horror! You've found one of my weaknesses. I collect horror anthologies, the older the better and preferably in mass market size. I've got a good handful right now, but nothing that could be called impressive...yet. What I like is often called "supernatural fiction" because most of it dates from a time when the term "horror" had yet to be invented as a name for any kind of genre. I DO read modern stuff, but only if it's good; gore for its own sake is a cop-out. And I don't watch horror movies as a rule because it's literally been decades since we've seen a good one. And no, I'm not really into prog metal, either. Just can't get enough well-written short stories that scare the living crap out of me. Well-written being, of course, the key term here.

^ have you sampled Robert Aickman (probably, he's in many anthologies)? IMAO, he's the best 'modern' horror writer. Barker is a genius at times too but the gore level might turn you off. And just to be a provocative horror nerd: King and Rice are derivative hacks and anybody who actually enjoys Poppy Z. Brite is an idiot. |

James: I have, indeed, sampled Aickman (I have both PAINTED DEVILS and COLD HAND IN MINE) and you're right about him being one of the most talented of modern authors. I think part of his skill lay in his minimal output-- he didn't just churn out story after story and story. And he concentrated on atmosphere, which so many writers don't seem to have enough faith in. Atmosphere can be everything. I've read stories which, going by what simply happens in the story, are mainstream fiction but which become horror or fantasy SOLELY by the skillfull crafting of atmosphere. Bradbury is a master at this. I find that in horror, as in every other genre, "good" (in a literary sense) and "popular" seem to be, most of the time (with a few exceptions) mutually exclusive. And I agree that, though she can be amusing at times, Poppy makes a much better model for J. K. Potter than she does a horror writer. |
