Much as I like them, they really don't have a place here (I think I suggested them myself about a year ago, but I've changed my mind).

I've just listened to Murray Street - Sonic Youth.This is slightly more melodic than previous offerings AFAIK.This album is closer to Television(or perhaps they had been listening to Mercury Rev) who I have recently checked out.Mercury Rev are also influenced by Sonic Youth which are even more melodic and have a Orchestrated backing.Fans of Syd Barrett should like these.

I would definately classify these groups as Alternative rock which have followed on from the influences of The Velvet Underground.All well worth a listen for prog fans,especially those who like a more atonal sound i.e. Porcupine Tree,even King Crimson or neo-Psych(the Cure).Perhaps Jane's Addiction comes inbetween these bands and Tool/A Perfect Circle(one of my favourite groups at the moment) - both of which I would also classify as Alternative rock/metal.

Entirely disagree - I've just been listening to both along side each other,there are similarities.You must admit that Jane's Addiction is one of the main influences of Tool/Perfect Circle.Sonic Youth & Jane's Addiction are influenced by Velvet Underground & the Stooges.The influences can definately be heard.I prefer where Tool/Perfect Circle have taken it though being a Prog fan.You cannot deny there is a noise rock/no-wave element to T/PC music which gives the Prog sound a fresh approach.

No they are not,really.They are Alternative Metal primarily.I would say they have experimental rock(probably where the Prog rock sound comes from - Adrian Belew etc.),Alt. pop/rock & post - punk influences.Nine Inch Nails are one of their influences which is Industrial Metal not a hundred miles away from Noise rock.

I have not seen it stated anywhere that they are into out and out Prog rock apart from later day King Crimson which is more atonal/experimental jazz/rock anyway.
