Quote And I thought this was ProgArchives, not HistoryArchives? If only we stuck to music instead.

I've been part of a "prog" forum where politics or so-called poltics were banned completely after a long thread about the war in Iraq. The owner simply couldn't handle the fact there were people NOT supporting George Bush's war, especially when these people were Americans themselves. To make a long story short: the whole incident resulted in poltics being banned, members being banned randomly, and it eventually led to everyone leaving the place. Months later the same place resurfaced again and i decided to give the place another try, but again a "political joke" (it was a good one if i remember well!) was posted by one of the members. To make a long story short again, members started leaving again.

I'm not a big contributor here, but i see this place is very successful: actually this is the biggest prog forum around. I think part of the success is because every discussion is allowed in here; the admins are very tolerant people. Personally i think maybe this place is a little bit too tolerant for a few things, but i think it's better this way than having too few tolerance.

Of course when you talk politics, religion and other sensitive stuff feeling get hurt. Mine were hurt a few times too (although not too badly), but hey!! As Greg Lake would say: C'est La Vie!

That's the way BillBoh- anonymity brings with it a certain disregard for fellow humanbeings. You have got to be willing to take a few bruises if you want to join in the fun

Of course not, it was just a great exuse for america to show off their power and to make the rest of their world fear them.

NO, the worst atrocity ever comitted was the political murder and paranoid processing of russians during the reign of Stalin.
Epic.

NO, the worst atrocity ever comitted was the political murder and paranoid processing of russians during the reign of Stalin.

Indeed.

... and let's not forget about Pinochet's terror regime in Chile.

There are many worst atrocities...

From my studies of WWII, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki came about because the Japanese were about to surrender to Russia, which, obviously, would have been bad news for the US. In order to circumvent the Russians, we struck a lethal blow to force the Japanese into surrendering to us.

Check out Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States." A very compelling collection of notes, documents and diaries of the people who lived the history. Fabulous.

Well Bill, I understand where you're coming from. This the 1st and only prog forum I've been a part of. And if anybody that has taken a political bashing here it's me. And my feelings are still in check. I knew most of the members here would despise our president. To be honest, being a Republician I'm not too thrilled about him either. I was really disappointed at my party for selling out to Bush just for his name (my hopes were on McCain during the primaries).

As for the war in Iraq, yes I think Saddam should've been taken out. But I don't think he was a top priority what with Bin Laden still unchecked and the N. Koreans aquiring nukes. I hate nukes, to me they are a coward's weapon. And I'm a veteran to boot! Like Patton said, there's no honor in killing anybody with a button. Hence why I started this thread. Rush Limbaugh said the only way to get rid of nuclear weapons is to use them. Unfortunately that is true. Nobody is going to dismantle their arsenal on the word of the other guy. So I guess they're here to stay.

I'm only surprised the Yanks actually managed to drop the bomb in the right place and there was no friendly fire during the Hiroshima bomb. However the Yanks were on top form with the balls up that was Nagasaki. Why these idiots ever got nuclear weapons is beyond belief.

I forget who said this, I think it was Sherman after the bombing of Atlanta in the Civil War. He said "The day you kill your enemy without looking in his face is the day war should be obsolete". Pretty profound.

I think tangerine62 should shut the f**k up. I hope he's at least brave enough to be the kind of moron who shoots his mouth off in pubs and gets the sh*t beaten out of him, but I'm afraid he's probably just another pathetic online-only loudmouth.

I don't see much intelligence in his posts either James. But we must be tolerant never the less.

You seemed little more profane than usual there James. Everything ok with you? A few too many yourself?
