ELP are a band who tend to polarise opinion.

Seen by some as the greatest exponents of '70 progressive rock, seen by others as the epitome of all that was wrong with the genre. Whatever your opinion, it is difficult to argue with the contention that ELP contained in Keith Emerson one of the greatest musicians of his generation.

The albums could be patchy, but usually contained moments of sheer brilliance - for myself, I would have to vote for Brain Salad Surgery, if only for Karn Evil

JIM:i chose Tarkus but somewhat reluctantly,it was more for the memories it evokes(and the fact that side 1 is so good) but there are so many great tracks on all the albums that the choice was difficult!!!. stay safe!!!

I'd have to choose ELP's debut, if only for the superb musicianship on songs such as The Three Fates, Lucky Man, The Barbarian, and so on. Other than that, Brain Salad Surgery comes close, as it has some very intruiging moments as well.

I chose Works vol. I &II. Fanfare For the Common Man is ELP at the top of their game. Who ever votes for Love Beach should be turned into a newt.

Tarkus is IMHO their best.

Tarkus gets my vote; their most adventurous all-around work, IMHO.  And that live version is a monster, too....

I had to vote for BSS, even though there are other tunes off Triolgy and ELP that are more meaningful to me. A a whole, BSS with Karn EVil 9 was their crowning achievement.

Hello everybody! What a great site!! My fave ELP album has to be Brain Salad Surgery. The playing is wonderfully fluid by all three of them and the dark tone of the songs appeals to me.One minor blot is Benny The Bouncer which have been better left off, but the majesty of Karn Evil 9 more than wipes away this little indiscretion.

Here's an old thread of Jim's. Worth resurrecting in view of all the current talk of ELP.

There's a problem, I like Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery almost the same, but I'' stay with Trilogy because it's better balanced and has Trilogy, my favorite ELP track.

BSS has Karn Evil 9 (Should have been played as one song not as separete parts) but also has Jerusalem that tkes the album down.

I chose their first album. It is in my humble opinion their best. The Three Fates is a brilliant piece of work, The Barbarian must be one of the strongest opening tracks to any album ever and Take a Pebble is just the most beautiful track, perfect really.

brain salad surgery!

BUT, I think my heart goes for Emerson Lake & Powell!! This album is absolutely wonderful! It is the first time ELP really sound modern, powerful & heroic, like Asia or Pallas! It is really underrated!

I love the song Tarkus, but as an album it is a bit of a letdown in the second half.

The first album is more consistent, so I voted for it.
